A gift certificate to his favorite restaurant is always well received. I've never had anyone turn down wine or champagne either. Foodstuffs depend on how observant they are. I have some friends who are strictly kosher (look for a tiny K or U in a circle on the label) and others for whom anything goes. You can do a gift certificate for store or online food, too and not have to worry about the issue. Lorin G. could answer this question for you better than I.

This man has access to more wine than most of us can imagine, and thanks JAG, but no way on the coffee. Gift certificate is a nice idea. I just want it to be respectful and thoughtful.

My dad is a Jewish man with the means to buy "whatever." I try to find him things he wouldn't bother with himself. Some previous gifts: USDA prime dry aged NY strips from both Lobels and Smith and Wollensky, hand painted uniquely filled chocolates from normanloveconfections.com, fruit of the month club from Harry and David. Funny thing is that I gift Dad for Christmas. Mom was Catholic. As a child we gifted both holidays. Later on, just Christmas.

I am Jewish and do not observe dietary laws. The more observant among us do.

Is he local? The notion of gift certificates Kosher Cajun or Casablanca would only be useful if he were. If not, to me, New York is the mecca of all things related to Jewish food:

I would ask either he or his support staff if he kept Kosher before investing in anything significant- for instance, Jody's suggestion of steaks is lovely, but if all he eats is Kosher meat, it would be a complete waste of your time, money, and effort.
