Gift for Jewish man

Post by BobRSnow »

I know that you don't give a Christmas gift to a Jewish man, but I want to give a Holiday gift to one. He probably lacks for nothing. What do you think he would appreciate that's food related?
Thanks,
b

A gift or gift certificate/card from Kosher Cajun Deli?

A gift certificate to his favorite restaurant is always well received. I've never had anyone turn down wine or champagne either. Foodstuffs depend on how observant they are. I have some friends who are strictly kosher (look for a tiny K or U in a circle on the label) and others for whom anything goes. You can do a gift certificate for store or online food, too and not have to worry about the issue. Lorin G. could answer this question for you better than I.

This man has access to more wine than most of us can imagine, and thanks JAG, but no way on the coffee. Gift certificate is a nice idea. I just want it to be respectful and thoughtful.
This is an odd question isn't it?

Bob, do you know his tastes?
Does he even keep Kosher? If he does, then I like the idea of Casablanca.

If he doesn't, then

Does he like chocolate?
What about a gift certificate to:

Cork & Barrel
The Farmer's Market
St James Cheese

This is a very subjective question.

BTW, my Jewish friends & I do exchange Christmas gifts!
It takes all kinds!

I'll never forget the one time we were deciding where to go for breakfast or brunch & what to order.
My friend, Claire, said, "Of course, I will not be eating pork. Pause. Silence. Well, of course . . . except for . . . . bacon.
EVERYBODY loves bacon!" :p

My dad is a Jewish man with the means to buy "whatever." I try to find him things he wouldn't bother with himself. Some previous gifts: USDA prime dry aged NY strips from both Lobels and Smith and Wollensky, hand painted uniquely filled chocolates from normanloveconfections.com, fruit of the month club from Harry and David. Funny thing is that I gift Dad for Christmas. Mom was Catholic. As a child we gifted both holidays. Later on, just Christmas.

Bob:

I am Jewish and do not observe dietary laws. The more observant among us do.

Is he local? The notion of gift certificates Kosher Cajun or Casablanca would only be useful if he were. If not, to me, New York is the mecca of all things related to Jewish food:

The best pastrami in NY is from Katz's Deli (http://www.katzdeli.com/menu_download.pdf)
The best bagels are from H & H (http://www.hhbagels.net/(S(etvwer45ig0z ... aster.aspx) or Ess-a-Bagel (http://www.ess-a-bagel.com/)
The best overall deli in NY is Second Avenue Deli (http://www.2ndavedeli.com/)
The best smoked fish (eg. Lox, etc) is Barney Greengrass (http://www.barneygreengrass.com/welcome.php)

I would ask either he or his support staff if he kept Kosher before investing in anything significant- for instance, Jody's suggestion of steaks is lovely, but if all he eats is Kosher meat, it would be a complete waste of your time, money, and effort.

Hope that helps - feel free to send me a note (PeterZimmermanMD@aol.com) or give me call (504-782-9250) if I can be of any further assistance.
