Evacuees in Alabama

Post by Kass »

My husband and I live in Alabama, about halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery. We come to New Orleans several times a year and love it there. I would like to know if any of you evacuated to Alabama due to Gustav and had any good meals? I know you didn't come for the food, but sometimes you get lucky! Comments?

Best non-home-cooked meal I ate during my evac in Daphne was at the Mellow Mushroom. The place was slammed, but everything was fine. It was acceptable pizza, good chew to the crust, though a tad thicker than I like. One huge plus of the MM was the extensive draft selection--tried the Lazy Magnolia southern pecan and some others I can't recall. Aside from hordes of hyped tykes running about, 'twas a positive experience.

Mellow Mushroom is a chain - I'm not sure where they're based, but I've been to locations in Atlanta (Decatur) and Nashville.

I don't say that to imply anything bad - I've always enjoyed their pizza. I've never eaten in, though, so I haven't had the opportunity to try their beer selection. My loss, I expect.

MM is a chain out of Atlanta. They have recently popped up all along the Gulf Coast (Ocean Springs, Gulf Shores, Destin, Panama City, etc.), so I'm hoping a NOLA location can't be too far off. My first MM pizza experience was in Baton Rouge and it's one of my favorite pizza chains.

As far as evac food, we ended up in Montgomery, AL and had a few good pizzas from MM and some pretty decent Thai from Lek's Railroad Thai, which was next to our hotel downtown. Everything else we ate during evac was utterly forgettable.

Well, we didn't evacuate to Alabama..but we sure did eat and drink our way across Missouri. We spent Saturday thru Wednesday nights in Cape Girardeau, MO...on Sunday, we discovered Jimmi's..a nice bar with a pretty good menu. It seems like we did a couple of appetizers and ended up doing steaks there for dinner later on the same evening...but we started drinking really early in the day and the rest of it is kind of a fog! I do know they make a great margarita and my companions seemed to enjoy the bourbon. I think the steaks were pretty good...but will hold back judgement until I can try them and not be under the influence.. We did manage to find "My Daddy's Cheesecake"...it's a small chain that started out in Cape Girardeau. They have many different flavors of cheesecake..but to be honest, it was just okay. I have to say that I make a pretty mean cheesecake and believe it's better..of course, mine isn't mass produced..that could be the difference..BUT..the next morning..we stopped by for cinnamon rolls..and OMG...I would go back just for one of those.

On to Kansas City..we did mexican at our favorite neighborhood place...(just a few blocks from our home back there) Jalapeno's...yummy as always..this place makes the best guacamole and salsa that we've ever had. Then the next night it was on to Smokestack Barbecue for some burnt ends and ribs. Good stuff...I had ordered barbecue for Doug's birthday and it arrived in dry ice on the Friday before we evacuated...we carted that stuff to Kansas City and back...ended up having burnt ends for dinner here at the house on Tuesday evening. I spent too much on this order..I wasn't about to leave it behind in the freezer.

Thank God that I didn't...the storm took out the fridge..ewwwww nasty smells..lol
