Bagels

Post by paz5559 »

I went to New Orleans Cake Cafe and Bakery yesterday for bagels cause I had the urge. Their bagels are actually passable (not great, better than anything else I've found in the metropolitan area.

Bagels in NY range from 65 to 85 cents, and $7-10/baker's dozen. So $2.00/bagel in NOLA seemed excessive.

Am I being unreasonable?

You should go to Stein's for bagels. I buy bagels there every week for my family and they are all addicted. Cold bagels that are partially baked sell for only $1. I bake them for ten minutes in a 350 degree oven and they are wonderful.

I'm not sure, but I think they get their bagels shipped in from New York.

You can get H&H Bagels frozen from both Kosher Kajun Deli and Martin WIne Cellar. Is that what Stein's sells?

If they flew them in, no. Bagels in Jersy are $1 apiece but they are huge. My preference is for fresh, hot, untoasted. Leftover, no matter where theyr'e from, they suck. No choice but to toast.

I agree that H&H is the way to go...I suspect that Stein's is using them. They are pretty much recognized as the best "commercial" bagel on the market.

AMEN Jodi. MAny people have never tasted a freshly baked hot bagel. In fact I hear around here about the donut man having the red light on when the donuts were fresh but Growing up in NY when you walked in to the bagel shop you always asked, " Whats Hot?" Even if buying a dozen to take home, you couldnt resist and a couple of the hot ones never even made it home. Toasted's ok but not the same.

Ess a Bagel is good enough for us. Nova and cream cheese on an everything is still my favorite.

Ess-a-bagel are better than H&H anyday! But where oh where can you possibly find them down here?

We make do with Panera's Astiago Bagels.

Good toasted .

If not toasted, they are too hard.

I used to pick some up for meetings in Houston from New York Bagel and had a hard time with them in the car. I don't care for sweet bagels or just plain bagels (unless you got lox and cream cheese) but a dozen fresh, hot, garlic bagels along with another dozen hot, fresh, onion ones is enough to drive you straight off the road trying to reach for them in the back seat.

I especially like the little ones...not so much dough. I have bought them here at Albertson's and cut in half and toasted in the toaster oven then slathered with cream cheese....as close as I have come to those fresh ones.
