Kobe beef

Post by justagirl »

I have a friend looking to purchase Kobe beef. I'm assuming he wants American for whatever reason, it's not my place to judge, just to find out if any stores, Farmer's Market, anywhere sells it. Do you know?

Try whole foods. I saw some at the Baton Rouge store a couple of weeks ago. I assume they all carry it.

The Whole Foods on Magazine has it. It's usually in the back not in the case but they'll get out whatever cut you want. They call it "Waygu."

I am pretty sure wagyu is just the Japanees style (breed) of cattle and Kobe is the subset of that which is fed beer and massaged etc.

More info here.

I think I have had WF wagyu and do not remember being particularly impressed. YMMV. It should at least be as good as prime (like from a high end steak house or restaurant). If there is not a lot of marbling, I would be pretty unwilling to pay much for it.

I'm not a fan of American Kobe beef at all. Just finding out info for an aquaintence.

Now, the real deal, give me some of that Japanese Kobe anyday. Melts in my mouth like butter!

the only place i found it is a supermarket on the west bank down barataria...
called, "Laborias" or something like that.

the head butcher was very nice, and only needs a couple of days notice.
i got it @ $29.99 a lb for the ribeye.

I bought it a while back at WF and also remember it being mid 20s. I was not impressed.
