Re: Salad Bar
seems every grocery has a salad bar. after reading about preservatives and other people's germs...I find them scarier than ever.
I'm guessing you might find one at those chinese buffet type places.

Re: Salad Bar
Whole Foods Metairie and Uptown have very good salad bars, I (think) the Rouse's on Veteran's before Causeway next to k-mart is also organic as far as basic salad vegetables, mgbeads wrote:Where are the good salad bars in this area? Over the last few years they seem to be going by the way side.
If you're able it's best to go when they first put it out, weekday/weekend and eat it later, that way it's really fresh.
The germ factor doesn;t really bother me, at least you can "see" it happen, you never know what goes on behind closed kitchen doors;)....JJ

Re: Salad Bar
Oooooo, I absolutely LOVE salad bars. I have always loved salads, even when I was a small kid. The ones at Whole Foods look good, but isn't it something like $8.99 a pound? I usually only eat the "cheaper" things on salad bars(celery, cucumbers, red onions, croutons, bacon bits, egg, brocolli)--not the "High End" stuff and I always have more than a pound when I weigh my container(those croutons must be heavy LOL), so I kinda stay away from those salad bars b/c almost $10.00 for a plain salad seems kinda high to me.
I ate at this great place in Colorado that was called Souper Salad or Soup n Salad(I can't remember what it was exactly) and it was this LONG, HUGE A$$ bar with almost everything imaginable on it for a salad. You could also get soup and they made their own bread. I commented that I would love one of these in the N.O. area and my friend said that New Orleanians would never support the place b/c we're not healthy enough.
I can't think of many good salad bars here now. The Sushi/Chinese buffet places have a very LIMITED salad bar with only iceberg lettuce and 4 or 5 toppings.
I'll probably be stoned for saying this, but I do go to Golden Corral occasionally(at off times--usually during the week in the late afternoon before dinner time) and get their salad bar. Everything always looks fresh, they have iceberg and romaine lettuce, many items not usually found on a salad bar(such as artichokes, blue cheese crumbles, grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, or grilled steak strips, real bacon bits, different types of cheeses(not just cheddar) and all the regular toppings too(celery, mushrooms, cucumber, eggs, red onion, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, etc.). I don't usually like buffets and Golden Corral is a mess when it's crowded, but I enjoy their salad bar.
I dunno bout Shoney's salad bars anymore as I haven't been there in years, but as a kid I LOVED their salad bar too.

Re: Salad Bar
I do often get salads from whole foods, and the heavier items like cauliflower, cucumber, etc I just buy whole in the produce dept to cut up and add at home...
I find prices in general are high on almost everything

Re: Salad Bar
The Rouses out by Chateau is great. I also adore salad bars. I used to love Golden Corral's salad bar until they took off the spinach. Then... not so much.
Now this is more like it.

What is Golden Corral?

It's a buffet, all-you-can-eat place on Williams in Kenner.

Re: Salad Bar
Pre-SAC buyout, I had a conversation with a Rouses deli supervisor about why they didn't put in some salad bars. I was told that take-out salad bars were on their way out due to Board of Health issues. That apparently did not come to fruition, as post-buy-out, former SAC locations still have salad bars.
Pre-buy-out, SAC had improved their salad bar offerings, along with a not-unwarranted per-pound increase in cost. The Rouse organization currently continues to offer a quality product, virtually unchanged from the previous ownership.
I also have heard, from those who live in the area, that the Robert Fresh Market at Transcontinental and W. Esplanade has a good salad bar. Although not quite as cosmetically appealing as some others in construction, its offerings are allegedly quite tasty.
