St Charles Tavern
1433 Saint Charles Ave
New Orleans, LA 70130
(504) 523-9823

This place has been cleaned up a bit. The food has definitely improved.
Bam and I have gone for breakfast about 4 times now on Saturday mornings and it's consistently good.
I'm hooked on the ham and cheese omelette (add onion) with potatoes and toast. The omelette is so good. I'm used to just getting egg with stuff in it around here, but the omelettes at the Tavern are so full of flavor and wonderful. Both the grits and the potatoes are very good. The only thing not so great is the biscuit.

I haven't ventured past the breakfast items, but so far I'm happy with the improvements. They're even kid friendly if that sort of thing matters to you. Claw machine and all. And I think they deliver, I often get their menu on my doors at home.

It's been so long since I've been to St. Charles Tavern, I even remember drinking beer there! We always went later, after a 10pm class for burgers.
The place was always packed with cops.

How's the cleanliness level in there these days, JaG?

Does SCT still have boiled crabs on Tuesdays? The burger used to be consistently good, but I haven't been in the place in at least 7 or 8 years.

I haven't seen the Tuesday night crabs in a while. I used to be there all the time too.

You can still do the 4am drunk food, but it's also not bad now for in the day light...it's not pristine by any means, but it is cleaner.

until i was 8 (when my folks split) i lived 4 or 5 blocks from the s.c.t. there was a "help wanted" sign in the window for what seemed like an eternity. i passed the place almost every day and was always comforted that no matter what happened i would always be able to get a job at the tavern when i grew up. the pinball machine in the window made it an attractive place to a little kid as well.

Used to go there for liquid breakfast after working night shifts years ago. There would be all nurses at one big table and then all cops at the next. One morning a drunk fell off his bar stool and we looked at the cops and the cops looked at us. Two of the cops got up and drug him outside and propped him up against the building and we all went back to our bloody mary's. :toast:
I suddenly feel old. :covri:

JAG and I had breakfast here the last two days. It was excellent both times. We are both reluctant to move past the omelets for two reasons. First, due to the rep of the place, one has to wonder how good the rest of the menu is. And second, the omelets are awesome.

Breakfast today was packed. Lotsa "who dats" when you enter the door. Great time to be in NOLA right now.

Before anyone goes running over there from the parade route...stop! Right now they have this crappy mini-menu and it really sucks. So wait til the hoopla is over before checking it out...trust me. We've been twice and the second was worse than the first and the first was pretty horrible.
