O'Brien's Grill in Gretna

Post by jshushan »

Lunch at O'Brien's was excellent. Pea soup with (real) jumbo lump crabmeat and crispy tasso and then artichoke cheesecake with sauteed oysters. This worked, rocked and should be eaten.

I love O'Brien's. I don't think it gets near the attention that it should.

Where is this place? The split pea soup sounds awesome.

The arty cheesecake is obscenely good. Likewise everything else I've had there. The steak sandwich at lunch is tops. Service has always been excellent. It's located just to the west of the old Mudbug's dance place (now Mudbug's Storage) on Belle Chasse Highway, the equivalent of two or three city blocks west of the Belle Chasse Highway/ Terry Parkway intersection.

You're right. That was a daily special soup and was awsome. Location is simple from the LDG. Take the bridge to the Best Bank. Get where we get off to go the Courthouse. Left on Lafayette, (First light, not Derbigny). Down what magically becomes Belle Chasse Highway on the other side of the elevated. Keep going until you're sure you've gone too far. Pass Bellemeade and it's on the right.

Does this place do lunch on the weekends?

Here is an Oct 08 review from Ian McNalty. IIRC, Fatz had them at # 5 or #6 Steakhouse for their bone-in ribeye. Strangely, there is no phone number or hours listed with the review.

Does anyone know if BellSouth still provides Information service? Last time I called them for billing question, they directed me to their website...

Priceless...the phone compamy!

I gotta feeling that someone is going to be taken out to O'Briens.... sooner, rather than later! :toast:

For cryin out loud! The post went twice this afternoon, as system was running slow...and now I see the link was not posted to the McNalty review (FWIW). I shall try again:

I must say that everyone that I have talked to has said that is a real sleeper. I have not been yet, but on the list.

This was from Nov '08 so not sure if their hours have changed.

O’Brien’s Grille
$$$$$
Steakhouse
2020 Belle Chasse Highway
391-7229
Lunch Monday through Friday.
Dinner Monday through Saturday.

I went a few times last year when I had to go over to the Westbank for work. I thought it was fantastic and I didn't find it any more expensive than most places. It was a stunning surprise to see such a nice interior with such a plain outside. I can't recall what I had but it was a special. I remember it was an Irish sandwich but don't recall the ingredients. My friend had an eggplant bisque that at first I thought didn't sound good but after I tasted it, I wanted a bowl.
