Sorry this is tardy. We went last Thursday.
A buddy of mine was in town and wanted to go to...Jacque-Imo's. I haven't been in a while for reasons most would concur with but have actually heard good things about JI's the last few months.
Lo and behold, after trying to figure out how to get there with all of the construction I called them just to find out they were closed for summer vacation. Not that I would have figured out how to get there with all of the construction. I wonder how much will that hurt business once they re-open?
Anyway, from reading TulaneRebels blurt about Elizabeth's I figure that it would be a decent substitute. I was wrong. It was an excellent substitute!!
The place has a somewhat 'groovy' feel and wasn't very crowded. There was a standard menu and a specials menu that was almost as big. We weren't starved but ordered an appetizer.
The first thing to arrive at the table was a couple of delicious corn muffins. I think if we could have had a basket of those we would have skipped the app.
It took a little arm twisting of my less than adventurous friend from the midwest but we got the boudin balls. They were served with a mustard/remoulade type sauce and were perfect. Enough so that my pal ate 4 out of the 6!
For entrees we ordered a hanger steak and the grilled wahoo. Both came with a choice of 2 sides. The steak came with a chimichurri sauce and was cooked perfectly, Charred on the outside, med-rare inside. The wahoo, which was a special, was almost steak-like in texture but lighter. Nice smoky flavor served over a green olive relish. The sides were nondescript with the exception of the collard greens. Meaty and smoky with a slight hint of their natural bitterness. Definitely a must have.
The entrees were so big we skipped dessert. I inquired about Sunday brunch and the waitress confessed they get slammed as the kitchen is pretty small. But they do have an upstairs bar where you can wait.
Overall a successful outing. When my buddy comes back into town he will be taking his wife to Elizabeth's instead of JI's.
The whole dinner with 4 drinks and tip was $100.

Elizabeth's report
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
Re: Elizabeth's report
Their brunch is great, and the upstairs bar is a great place to wait, except that it's not manned consistently, and getting more drinks can be a problem. Just plan ahead when someone is available.

love elizabeths, especially for sunday brunch. pork candy baby! really great people there as well, and even if slammed? the waitstaff goes above and beyond to accomodate you. really love eggs elizabeth... nothing like using french bread for my favorite dish... eggs benedict. bring it on, and let me wait in line, I don't care. the only other spot in the bywater that comes close is Cake. simply wonderful food....

Jimo's has closed during the summer for many years even before the storm. I don't believe it has hurt them very much.
