Daniel's on the Bayou

Post by willifred »

OK, the Boucherie thread was a positive one, so I'll try another. Has anyone been to Daniel's. It's in "The Esplanade" appartment complex. I had lunch there just after the first of the year. Apparantly , somebody out there should know who "Daniel" is. I think he is Spanish, or at least had a Spanish restaurant in Meterie a while back. Now it is a seafood market maybe?...........
Lunch had potential. We started with some house made Chicken liver pate that was great. A big surprise. I had the pork shoulder (the person who sent me recommended it). Great flavor!!! My wife had old fashioned meat balls and spagetti with red sauce. Definately homemade. Other friends had Shrimp dishes. One a take on BBQ shrimp, the other a catfish grilled with sauted shrimp over the top. Both were well executed.
I'll stop rambling and ask if anybody has been??? If not, please go and give me some feedback. I'm out of town and can't go back for a while......looking forward to a report

I haven't been, but it has also been recommended to me. I am also curious to hear more about it. I'm not far from there, so I will have to remember to try it.

What are prices like?

Is there a bar (conducive to eating solo) ?

Buzd....I'm also within walking distance....one of the reasons I am hoping for this to be a good addition to the neighborhood. The prices are quite reasonable. The pork shoulder was actually less than 10 bucks, which was pretty amazing. They have a really nice , small bar (although I didn't utilize it at lunch) that may come in handy as a watering hole in time. There is a guy from the neighborhood named Don (grew up on Harding Dr. and still lives there) that took care of us, and did a really good job. You may infact recognize him, as I did, but couldn't place him.
All in all, we could really use this for a change of pace. I'm not as thrilled with Lola as some posters are. The old Gabbrielle place doesn't cut it. I think they also own Fellini, which has had substantial changes to their menu, discontuning the things I liked. Liuzza's by the Track hasn't been the same after the Flood. And I get sick and tired of the attitude I seem to get at Cafe Degas, even though I like their food alot. Parkway Bakery is really the only place in the Hood that I really have allround good feelings about, but not exactly a restaurant. In fairness, I haven't been to the Asian place next to Degas, but my gut tells me don't bother.

Thanks for the info.

I've tried not to get too involved with the Lola thread, either, because after a few visits, the garlic recipe seems to get into everything. I like it for what it is though.

Agree on LBT. Did the kitchen ever start staying open later?

I like Degas. I think their attitude is the genuine French rudeness, so that's cool. I don't find their bar conducive to eating solo, though.

Don't bother with the Asian place next to Degas (Asian Pacific). You will do MUCH better at Little Tokyo or Doson on Carrollton, both of which I frequent. I also like Juan's, and occasionally eat in the bar at Ralph's, although their wines by the glass are terrible (well, standard grocery store fare), and I find the menu a little stale.

I like Fellini's pizza, but I find I have to tell them how to make it (thinner crust, and cook it longer).

Well, I was going to go to Boucherie today, but your post has swayed me!

OH HAPPY DAY!!!

Thanks so much Willifred for posting about Daniel's.
Please, never apologize for rambling. How else would I have known?
By your description, this could only be Daniel Tobar's place.
You have no idea how happy I am to hear he has opened again!
I used to be a regular at his restaurant and greatly miss his food!

I sure hope he has Osso Buco on the menu (both lamb & beef) and the Ecuadorian Style Shrimp Ceviche stuffed in an Avocado.
If not, I will be begging him to put it on the menu!

And just for the record, Daniel is from Ecuador. Some of you may also remember his sister, Sophia, who has Sophia's.
Remember that wonderfully seasoned rotisserie chicken & heavenly garlic cheese biscuits?

Willifred, you made my day! Do you have a phone number for this place?
I do know the location, my friend Maria worked there for a short stint.
Daniel's should do well there.

A question - how long has this place been open?
Now you have me wondering how long I've been missing out!

We just noticed this place when we were in town trying to see as much of Prospect.1 as we could. I'm so glad to get a report.

If this is the Daniel I remember, there was a place in a shack of a location on Veterans about a mile or so east of Bonnebel. Tom F had visited the place a few times and had glowing reviews of it. The business moved to fat city and quickly fell off the deep end and closed not long after.
Hope I have that right, but that is the only Daniel's I can think of.

B I N G O!

I forgot about the Fat City place. Then he had a place on Tulane for a few months just before Katrina. I never made it to either of those locations.

However, I did make it to Daniel's on the Bayou yesterday for lunch!
Thanks again so much, Willifred.

Will post more when I get a chance. I'm a happy camper!
