Yvette, I started packing my own wine and noshed w/o all the worries while taking in the sunsets. there used to be some great tables around Lake Vista that were never used and right on the seawall to catch a good breeze.
Had an impromptu picnic last week on the Lakefront and it was lovely. Decided to have a sunset dinner there last Friday. It was so incredibly pleasant. Nice breeze, beautiful sunset, gentle breeze. Then the levee cops came thru with lights flashing and blaring loudspeakers that the lakefront was closed. 8 pm and we were forced to leave. WTH??? Next time we'll try to find a spot near the Bonnebal boat launch I guess, sigh.

what the Hinie Ho? I've seen people fishing out there well past dark thirty.
how is one supposed to swim in the mardi gras fountain after dark?
next you'll be telling the light show is broken...sigh.

The best restaurant in the river was Algiers Landing. Yep, it was IN the river, not ON the side of the river. Placed right smack in the center of the most dangerous, swift moving blind curve on the Mighty Miss between Minn and the Gulf...Algiers Point! Built on pilings. Over the water. Made to resemble an old camp. You could look down and see barges just a few feet away. IIRC, it was built around the time of the World's Fair, and was open for maybe 4 or 5 years. The building sat empty for ages, and was finally torn down since it was such a hazard to navigation.
Oh...and the food was not too good, but the drinks were!

This is where we took a out of town relatives for July 4th during the World's Fair. The much touted Japanese Fireworks on the river were spectacular & the old aunts & uncles could enjoy from our dining table. Algiers Landing had it's uses, and that was one of them. No, the food was not spectacular, but most meals were passable. I do remember the aunties & uncles being very happy with the drinks! What I never understood is how we navigated all of those stairs under the influence? Puzzling, but I never, ever saw anyone in there fall or trip. Including myself!

Yes, great place for fireworks. The Worlds Fair was doing them every night, on a smaller scale than 4th, but they were great from the top floor of Ernst also.
After leaving Algiers Landing, you could walk down 3 blocks to the original location of Michaul's too, and have a Fais Do Do!!! And a few more drinks! With no stairs!
Alot of people got stuck over on the WB, because I believe the ferry was only running until 9 p.m. Cabs would hang around looking for fares from panicked tourist.
I saw a show on the Fair last month on WYES. Man, those films look old!

I get emails from the New Orleans Municipal Yacht Harbor Management Corporation when they have meetings.
Supposedly The Dock is attempting to rebuild in West End.
Here is the excerpt from the Agenda of the meeting on June 4:
The Dock restaurant and bar previously was located immediately west of the MYHMC parking lot, over the Lake and, where over land, on the Jefferson Parish property on the east side of the 17th Street Canal. They propose to rebuild soon and would like to discuss that with the MYHMC Board – both as a matter of information and to discuss use of the portion of the parking lot that is in Orleans Parish, hence subject to the City/MYHMC lease. Previously, the Regional Planning Commission has made a presentation to the MYHMC Board concerning possible development in that same general area. A representative of the RPC will also be present and will offer her comments on this topic. She has already met with the representatives of The Dock in order to maximize the possibility that the two potential projects might work well together.
I don't know what actually happened at the meeting as they haven't sent anything out about it since.
The Regional Planning Commission proposed a large development at West End featuring hotels, condos, restaurants etc.

Thanks for that information special man. That is very encouraging that so far it appears the powers that be might try to work together on a project out there.
I really hope something gets done, because that whole parking lot and lake area looks like crap right now.

It does look like crap BTG. I went there a couple of weeks ago looking for some boat motor parts and was flabbergasted at how bad it looked. I hadn't been there since Katrina, so I don't know why I was so surprised, but damn it looks bad. When I was a teenager I remember biking out there thinking this is where the rich people come and that it was where I wanted to live.
I sure would love to see some restaurants/bars open up out there. It was such a great place to hang out and drink.

I go out there a few times a month to watch my friends play volley ball. It used to be so nice for me to be able to ride my bike across the pedestrian bridge at the end of the 17th street canal, watch volleyball, then go drink at the Dock or Jaegers. I am even willing to look over how bad the food was at the Dock at this point. Bring something out there.
