All this woulda, coulda, shoulda, "I had plans to go"...is bull$hit. Put your money where your mouth is. They don't want to hear that you ALMOST were going to go there. I hear that so much around here. Tell me where you went and what you ate, not where you want to go. Who cares about that?
I did eat there many times and will really miss Duke's fish sammich and Kimmie's awesome guacamole.
If you read his post about business, you might notice that he said business had been beter than ever; it was the summer months he didn't see making it through. Obviously, he had the local traffic, it was the visitors that was the concern.
Watch on who you cast aspersions.

We do not want to hear that you have eaten there "many times." That is bull****. When you have eaten there "ENOUGH" times to have kept them in business, then you will be qualified to post here..........................Oh brother.

I only ate there once. Put the blame on me.

I found that post (Bob's) to be rather nasty.
It's too easy to point fingers.

Come on, bring it. I can take it.
Yeah, maybe I didn't eat there ENOUGH, but I've been there many times.
If they're walking away with their chin up, good for them. It didn't take them under. Yeah, I read what he said. Yeah, my post was a bit nasty. Shoulda seen it before I edited it down.
My post was aimed at the "Oh, I wish I had gone there" types. Give me a break.

No one on this forum, in this thread said anything about regretting not having dined there. Oh, excuse me, one did, but he lives in NEVADA. Please confine your battles to where you find them.

Actually it was the loss of local traffic in the summer that had me most concerned. Every place in this city suffers during the summer -- partly because tourist traffic goes down but largely because the locals leave town, stop eating out and generally don't move around as much starting June 1st until after football season gets under way. I'd have been able to pay power, rent or sales taxes -- and electric power wins that battle every time.
Thanks for your support, Bob, and to the many, many others who enthusiastically supported us as much as they could. I think a lot of it was that folks just get into a rut (I know we do). Example -- we have never been to Upperline. When we get in the mood for that price range and that kind of food, we just go to Dick & Jenny's like cows follow a well-worn path in the woods. When folks wanted food in a Juan's price range in the Lower Garden District, they'd usually think of Juan's and forget we were there. Walking that extra block is a bitch when you're hungry. Call it culinary tunnel vision. We're all guilty of it.
Last year, our gross dropped off SIXTY percent from May to June. Given the current (worse) economy, we just couldn't handle that kinda dropoff. Better to go out now with the staff paid, a little money in the bank and outstanding bills at a minimum. Corporate euthanasia, I guess.
...but we're already talking to other spots about where to set up next. The fish sammich and the guac and the rest aren't gone -- they're just on hold for a little while. We'll let you know and thanks again.

I think most of us are sad that J'anita's has closed.
I enjoyed everything I ever ate at J'anita's.
And while I'm sorry they are closing, I think Duke & Kimmie have thought this one through and are taking the high road.
I'm proud of them for even having the guts to open a restaurant in this city.

People grieve loss in different phases. Anger and guilt are two of those phases. You seem to be in the anger phase. The people who are saying I meant to go seem to be in the guilt phase. We are all sad and wish it hadn't happened. Keep that in mind.

A friend who went through a business bankruptcy several years ago said his biggest regret was not recognizing and dealing with his situation earlier, and not getting out before everything went to hell-in-a-handbasket. Better the captain do the smart thing (live to fight another day) than the noble thing (go down with the sinking ship). Please keep us apprised as to where you land next.
