TV trays for us too. The Dining room table is for holding other stuff.

Kitchen island in front of the tv. Husband and I used to have dinner in the dining room once a week. Flowers, candles, cocktails, bottle of wine. Forgot about it till this thread. Will have to get back to it.

I do try to keep the dining table clean and free of clutter. It's hard because it's the first room when you open the front door...the perfect place to throw your stuff. I also like to have fresh flowers in a pretty vase at all times. Make me happy and my happiness is all that matters to me...LOL

Gosh, these responses surprise me! We - and it's just the two of us at home - eat at the dining room table for just about all meals. We'll eat pizza on the couch in front of the television, but that's about it. I couldn't abide the noise/site of a television in the dining room or kitchen.

If you don’t dine (notice, we aren’t speaking of snacks or just noshing here) at a table (be it in the dining room, kitchen, or patio/courtyard), you should really examine not only your level of sophistication but that of your basic civility. If the TV is often on during your meals and especially if you can actually see and hear it while dining, you are about as uncouth as one can get. I won’t even get into how sitting in front of a TV while dining identifies such a person as one who does not even have a glimmer of understanding what the enjoyment of both good food and dining companions is all about and obviously only considers dining as a way of providing one’s body with the necessary nutrients to sustain one’s life (no matter how sad that life may be).

And, yes, bdavid, it is surprising that self-described foodies would eat anywhere other than at a table and, especially, in front of a TV.

I grew up eating just about every meal with the family at the dining room table. My parents were big on that and I'm very glad that they were. I sometimes thought it was a pain as I wanted to watch tv, but I appreciate the family time and togetherness now.

When my GF and I are both home in time for dinner, we do eat in the dining room. We usually eat, drink a glass of wine or beer, and talk about how each other's day went. Rarely though are we home together for dinner. When I'm home alone, I will eat in the den with the tv on. I'm sorry Feng if that offends you, but it is boring sitting in a quiet dining room all alone eating one's meal. Most of my dinners are not "gourmet" experiences to be savored and relished with each bite. I'll usually just eat a big salad, or something simple like red beans & rice or black eyed peas.

I live alone, and I also REALLY watch my calories when I am not indulging in a fine meal at a restaurant or someone else's home. I do not cook at all except for eggs, so when I eat at home I am mostly just heating things up or having a sandwich or cereal or cottage cheese, fruit, etc. So at home I usually eat standing up in my tiny kitchen with the newspaper spread out over the range. :-) Swear to God I do still consider myself a foodie, though. Seriously.

If it's just me, I'll usually eat in the living room area on a TV tray while I'm checking my email and such. If even one other person is over to eat, dining room table.

A lot of times though, I have a nice lunch and just a dinner snack, so just picking something in the kitchen or such, no real 'fork and plate'.

If I go through the effort to make a fine meal, even if just for my self, I'll sit at the table. But it's kinda boring sitting in the dining room all by myself.

You wouldn;t be alone here,
My cats will gladly join you ON the dining room table;)

I always eat at the dining room table with a tablecloth, real napkins, china, a crystal wine glass and a candle, even if it's just me. I can eat the most wonderful dinner but if it's in front of the television, it might as well be Kraft Mac and Cheese. And, alternatively, I can have leftovers or a relatively plain bowl of pasta but if it's at the dining room table, it seems so much more special.

We eat at the kitchen peninsula (I like that description!). It's bar height (higher than a table), which I think is nice. But when the boy gets old enough to eat with us, to the dining table we will go, because his high chair would not make him as tall as we are... plus I think the "dinner table" concept is good for children as a way of instilling family values. Those values won't disappear if you don't let them!
