Has anyone been to La Pena Mexican restaurant on W 21st St. just West of Tyler St. in Covington?
It is close to the house so I wanted to give it a try if it is halfway decent.
Anyone been to La Pena?
Re: Anyone been to La Pena?
I went once. The food was typical Mexican. Ok. Service was awful. I have never gone back. Too many other places to go for Mexican. When I say awful, they never came and filled drinks, asked us if we needed anything else, dropped off the food, stood up at the front and chatted with themselves, ignored my trying to get their attention but promptly brough me my bill.

cstoehr,
Thanks for the quick reply.
What are your favorite Mexican placed on the Northshore? I have been to most of them except for the one in Abita Springs on Hwy 36 (I think). Heard a couple of very good reviews but nothing recently.

I am hoping that the new Mi Mamacitas that just opened on HWY 21 will be good. I like the one in Mandeville but it is a pain to get to. Stopped by the other day (last Sat?) and they were not a full menu and the ac was not working so decided to wait until another time. I think they rushed to get open. I think they would have been better off to delay but that is just me.
I like Carettas in Mandeville and also the little place in The Rouse's center that I can't think of the name of in Covington. The atmosphere can be a little hectic sometimes but the food is good to me. Of course my favorite is my husbands home cooked Mex (& Chinese).
Just remembered, we recently went to one in Lacombe for the first time (coming back from a boating trip). I think the name of it was Pepe's, and I enjoyed it. A lot of food and very tasty. Had good specials on Margaritas too.

Re: Anyone been to La Pena?
I took the clan to the new Hwy 21 Mi Mamacitas last week hoping that it would be the same as the one in Mandeville. The menu was very limited. We got the tacos (1 barbacoa, one pork, and one chicken), a burrito (chicken), and the nachos. The nachos were decent (you pick a meat and then have them add whatever toppings you want). The other items were just ok. It reminded me of the chain place Moe's (the Subway of Mexican-type food).
I really hope this is just temporary but it looked like this was the direction they were going. I will try it again in a few months but I don't have high hopes. It is a shame because a good Mexican place in that area would do great business (just like a grocery store, but I think one is coming!!!).

I agree with you. I will never go to Moe's, that was I tried it once, did not have a good experience. Got talked into going with someone else. Have not been back.
"supposedly" the Mi Mamacitas will be full service and not counter once they get the place fully licensed with liquor and the building and staff issues solved, I was "told". I hope so.
