Need a good barber!

I think it's time to switch barbers. I had a GREAT one pre-Katrina, but he has moved out of the area. My current barber (the one I also used before I found the great one) just doesn't seem to care. He snaps at any request, saying that he's the barber and he knows what he's doing and that he'll cut it the way he wants because he didn't go to barbers' school for nothing.

Thing is, I need to find a barber who will at least hear me out and understand what I'm looking for. I have a prominent (and f***ing obnoxious) widow's peak, and I want my hair cut in a style to minimize it. If I could just find a good barber who would hear that and run with it, I think I would be fine.

I really don't want to go to a trendy chain like Supercuts....I tried them years ago, and it seems like they'll hire any bejeweled yat with too much makeup who thinks she can "style" hair simply because she can give her poodle a decent trim. I'm looking for a classic barber, but one with an open ear who actually cares about what the customer wants.

So...any recommendations? I'm open to anything as long as it's not downtown or on the Westbank (too inconvenient).

Joseph's Barber shop on Cleary Ave. between I-10 and Vets. Ask for Joe Lorio or his brother Ray. These guys have cut hair for 50 years. They still "clean" you up with a straight razor after the cut. Warm lather and all. And at $11 it's a service you can't get any where else for that price.

Now...just don't go when I'm trying to go there. I hate waiting.

I do miss the old style barber shop atmosphere.

When I first moved down here twelve or so years ago there were two or three old men cutting hair at a place in Fat City. Their shop justed oozed of an older N.O. setting and I think they even used to be in the Irish Channel at one time.
One had been a boxing referee, one or two were somehow involved in horse raising, and they all liked telling jokes. There were playboys laying around and if it was a Saturday in the fall, there were football games on. There were always people stopping in to say hello and BS with the guys and such. My best memory of the place was being able to call next door to Mr. Eds(I think that was the name) and order a po-boy. When you were almost done the barber would bang on the wall to let the guys in the po-boy shop know to start packing up your order.

I wholehearted agree with that! Louis and I grew up together and he's top-notch! Oak between Dublin and Dante.

My friend swears by some guys on W. Napoleon close to Transcontinental that serve cocktails, if you want one, while you wait.

I miss the Wack brothers (actual name, not so sure about the spelling) next door to the now closed hardware store, Tulano's pizza and across the street from the current Rouses. Great cut.

Anyway, I can recommend Perry's Barber shop on Airline across from LaSalle Tract, down the street from Saints camp. While in season, every now and then you will run into a Saints player there and it's my understanding that Benson himself goes there. $12 cut and they also offer shaves.

Barry at Barry's on Belle Chase Hwy, a classic, old style Barber. He has given many first, and last haircuts to my friends and family. Well worth the drive.
