Neat web site, find your house
Re: Neat web site, find your house
My house was off by at least $495,000.00. So was every house in my neighborhood.
I know, we just had it re-appraised.
I did like the ariel shots though. Also, the ariel shots are old, cause the house down block has had his trailer gone for a while.
The house across the street, he sold that car at least two months ago.

Re: Neat web site, find your house
My childhood home was off by a few hundred thousand-- it said $0. I'm wondering how many addresses entered into that website are going to suddenly have their mailboxes inundated with real estate marketing-related junk mail.

My value was way off (by about 100%), but my neighborhood was destroyed in Katrina which must have something to do with it.

Not defending the site, just curious what you think. I found my old house in NO and thought it was wayyyyyyyy over priced.
They were under on mine. These things are accurate about 10-15% of the time. It's kind of like a broken clock being right twice per day.
I used to spend half of my day arguing with underwriters because they ran an "AVM" that said the property was worth $????. I never lost one of those arguments and never will.
The Assessors don't have accurate information so pulling neighborhood sales data from public transfers is worthless.
Of course, homeowners almost always disagree with the appraiser's value.

Every house in my neighborhood was way underpriced. I couldn't make see much in the ariel views either. The one showing as mine has some sort of pitch on the roof that I don't have, so I'm not even sure the addresses were correct.

For those that might be interested, google maps now has "street view" for the NOLA area. Plug in an address and get a picture of the location!!
A little creepy, if you ask me..

My neighborhood too. The price on one of the houses was less than the guy paid for the lot across the street from me, which they will soon be building on.gumbo lover wrote:Every house in my neighborhood was way underpriced. I couldn't make see much in the ariel views either.
You have to zoom for the ariel shots. Showed a nice picture of my pool:)

Not only zoom, but you can move the camera with the circles with arrows for views of the house from four different sides.
Also using the down-to-the-right diagonal arrow you can enlarge the picture quite a bit.

Two things...
On the appraisal, it was remarkably close to what I think. I live Uptown(within spitting distance of the 90,000 freezer, if that gives you a location) and this house sold in 2000 and then I bought it in October 2006 after looking at, no kidding, 41 houses. I used to buy and sell them, so I like to think that I know what a good investment is. My value was up about 55,000 over selling price (350k). Given previous sales and our improvements, that's not far off-though this is MY house and not a rent house and I will be here for awhile (especially since they stole my car Friday night-BUT, happily, it was an SUV and frankly, it's a great thing, as the insurance is way more than I could get for a trade).
The other thing is the Google Camera...
I was cutting my grass the afternoon that the weird camera van came by. They stopped and chatted for awhile. It's a big project. The ulitimate goal is EVERYWHERE on a map. It's weird, and I'm not sure of the purpose, but it's pretty cool. Nerds rule!
