Cold Weather Cooking

Post by Low-N-Slow »

Weather like this makes me want to make a big ol' pot of soup. Chunkier the better-- throw in whatever's on hand in the fridge and pantry. I'm thinking right now I have some beef stew meat in the freezer, a quart of beef stock, onion, carrot, celery, green beans, diced tomato, turnip. Maybe some barley, and cut up spaghetti, too.

What food does chilly weather make you crave?

I love it too Nan....the saltier the better! Although we get ours from Smithfield Va usually. We usually cook it during the night and I can hardly sleep from the wonderful aroma. We start out eating it at breakfast and chow down all day with various sides.

You know what???? Girlfriend, Goldie does the overnight thing, too.... perhaps I'll get scrubbing that bad boy and toss it in the oven tonite! Thanks for the nudge! :toast:

Been enjoying leftover braised cabbage from New Years for lunch this week. I braised it with onions, garlic, pickled pork, cider vinegar, a bay leaf, a knob of butter and some chicken stock... over a little rice... ate it twice today!
Also thinking about a Provencal Vegetable soup w/ Pistou I made awhile back. Ina Garten's recipe, with leeks and saffron.
What I'm really craving though is a huge plate of Spaghetti and Meatballs with lots of Chianti... then a nap.

Seems many of us are thinking the same way.

Oyster stew.

Cider braised pork shoulder with cabbage and turnips.

Banana nut bread.

Oh yeah!

I have a brisket, and a Corned Beef brisket. Not sure which one I will do, or if I will do both.

Also planning the beef stew, and vegetable soup. May use the brisket, for the soup, or nix the beef stew and use that beef in the soup. Also may cook the brisket overnight...low and slow INSIDE!

Fajitas as per daughter's request...

We've been cold already for a month now. Did a big pot of cabbage soup about a week before Christmas. Now I'm holding a recipe for Soup of 7 Onions & 7 Peppers, which I am about to try.

Just finished making cabbage because the New Years cabbage was soooo good. I'm making collards for next week too. Red beans are soaking tonight as well. Greens and beans. My fave.

Soup I'm not so healthy about. I like cream soups and cheese soups. Rich and chunky. But I love soup during cold weather.

Oatmeal and grits in the morning too. And hot chocolate right before bed.
Now this is more like it.
