Streetcare Sandwiches was the last decent (and lasting) place on Carrollton between Willow and Jeanette. For that matter, the Cucos nearby on Carrollton has also turned over more than a few times.

I passed there this morning on the way to the market & noted the same.
There's a new Mexican restaurant opening in the old Streetcar spot.

If I'm thinking of the right spot, there's a sushi restaurant where Saltwater Grill used to be-or did that already turn into a Mexican restaurant?

That's a strange one because Lebanon Cafe does very well and it's just 1/2 block away.

there's the place on N. Carrollton that is now Fiesta Latina (across from Venezia's). my first meal at that location was Palmer's.

is there anything open in what was Arabesque?

Dan is right video poker keeps the vast majority of bars in New Orleans alive. It also supresses the drink prices. You cant keep your doors open selling 1.50 miller high lifes...no matter how many you sell...unless you have another income stream. For many many places that was...and is video poker. In the past it was quite easy to lose money on the bar part of the business and know that you still had income fro the poker. That's changing. The economy has reduced video poker proceeds significantly. You may see even more places drop.
I also think video poker in many ways hampers the city's abilities to develop and keep upscale bars. The price point on liquor and beer is so much lower in this community that places doing really nice things have trouble charging the prices they need to charge in order to be profitable.
Now that there is no smoking allowed in restaurants I think many of the little mom and pop restaurant/bars have had a hard time making ends meet. Video poker players smoke. A total ban would have been much more even handed.

The original Cuco's is now Sushi. Remember we all talked about it being named ___________ and how that might be considered strange?

Lebanon does well because:

#1) the physical space has a good vibe

#2) the owner knows how to treat his customers

Cursed locations have trapped negative energy.
Streetcar did a bang up business.
Nothing else in that location has since then.
