Satsumas

How are they this year? Has anyone traveled to Belle Chasse to load up?

I've had some from the Bayou Lafourche area (generally not as good as the Jesuit Bend grown ones) and they were decent but a little tart. I've always heard that until we have the first morning frost they won't get really sweet. This coming from a 96 year old grandmother who has grown them for her entire life.

My backyard satsumas are pretty tasty right now. I think everybody with 6' of sunny yard should plant one--they're attractive, not too large, and very rewarding garden plants.

I thought they needed about 20 ft. diameter. Yours do well in that little space?

Dwarf varieties ('Miho' is a good one) take up very little space....they'll start bearing when just 3' tall.

Picked up 2 x 5 lb bags at Becnel's Sunday ($5 each). I don't eat them, I just pick up and deliver to wife, daughter, and apparently all of her buddies at work. Here is her response when I asked if they were good:

"GREAT!!! The ones I brought to work on Monday were gone by the end of the day – everyone loves them.
The ones at home will be gone by Friday.

Next Belle Chasse visit you could buy more – the season is so short!"
********
She bought a bag at Rouses, but they were alot more green than orange. Becnel's were all orange. She said the green were harder to peel.

Guess it will be weekly stop now! If only Bez was open on Sunday...

The ones that we've been getting on LA 10 in Bogalusa are great....as sweet as can be. (roadside produce stand) Five bucks a bag.
