French Food Festival

Post by EatinAintCheatin »

Here's my annual shout out for the French Food Festival, this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Larose La. at the Civic Center.

It's about an hour drive from N.O. heading "down the bayou."

Here's why I go:

"Decorated food booths showcase over 20 different local specialty dishes. Visitors and locals alike delight in tasting Shrimp Boulettes, Crawfish Etouffe, Seafood Gumbo, Alligator Sauce Piquante, White Oyster Soup, Shrimp Po-Boys, Shrimp Etouffe, Jambalaya, Pork Routee, Gratons, Hogshead Cheese, Crawfish Fettuccine, Fried Fish & White Beans, Oyster Po-Boys, Seafood Pistolettes, Crawfish Meat Pies, Shrimp Shish Kebobs, Fried Crab Claws, Boudin, and Red Beans & Rice. Specialty desserts include Pralines, Tartes a la Bouille, Cobblers and Beignets and bring connoisseurs back year after year."

I'll be there. Looks like we'll have good gumbo weather this year.

I hope you're right. And I hope the rain stays away on Saturday. I will stop by the Gumbo booth and say hello. As you know, my entire in-law family will be sampling the Gumbo again.

See you there.

Jeeves,

All I can say is that it's seasoned and cooked to tender perfection. It has a burst of flavor. Imagine chunks of delicious pork, served over rice for ..... say $5 a plate. Hungryone, please add your expertise here.......

I usually get about $25 of food tickets and make myself miserable. Hungryone's gumbo is not to be missed, as is the fried fish and shrimp. Let me know it you decide to go. We'd love to meet up down there.

Routee (or roti) is fresh pork, cooked slowly in its own fat and a minimum amount of water, until extremely tender and slightly browned. Some cooks add minimal seasoning (onions, garlic, a little fresh parsley or green onions, some red pepper), but it's mostly about the pure porky flavor.

It's similar to carnitas, but wetter & not as browned.

Well, it's not "roti" in the proper French sense--which would mean "roasted". It's very similar to the Haitian creole dish "griot", which is cooked more like New Orleans style grillades (wet-cooked, as opposed to the grilled-pork cajun style grillades).

I believe I saw on WWL-TV this morning that they would have some people in studio cooking/PR for this event on Wednesday 10/21 Morning Edition (from 6am to 9 am.)
Sounded like the news crew was very excited about the treats they would be able to enjoy and snack on.

Anyone here going to be in that group on TV?
