Good Chorizo at Wal-Mart

I'm not a big fan of shopping at Wal-Marts...on a whim, I decided to check out the "Neighborhood Grocery" Wal-Mart has at Williams and W. Esplanade.
I felt like I was in a foreign country...which may describe Kenner at this Point?
Check out counters were too busy...it was a Sunday afternoon.

I did, however find a few good bargains...one being a package of Johnsonville Chorizo: a 1.25 lb. package for $3.50....I had seen this same size by local companies for $8-9.
I used it for breakfast burritos...squeezing it out of the casing to saute with onions & eggs...very tasty and not too greasy or spicy.

That's interesting.

I buy my chorizo from Mr. Amato at the Gretna Farmer's Market.
It's a reasonable $6.
One day when I finally get over to pick up the papaya seeds, I'll bring a package of it to you if you like. My treat.

I get a lot of my mexican spices from WM, along w/ chorizo and cheeses.
love the comino mix, the damiana, and the achiote.

Is it all WM - or just the one in your 'hood?
I only go there once a year or so & am just not that familiar.

Originally bought at the WalMart on Jeff Hwy/Huey P., but they didn't have them last week. Bought them at different WM's in Arkansas, so I assume they may be at all of them. There is an aisle for Hispanic foods and a separate spice section on the aisle. Sometimes, they are in the front of the store near the peppers.

Has anyone tried the chorizo from Terranova on Esplanade.....really good, and I like supporting an independent over sprallmart anyday.........

I happen to agree with your thinking.
That is one reason I buy from Mr. Amato, at the Farmer's Market.
His products are very good & I love the Farmer's Markets!

Every once in a blue moon, I need something that I either can't get somewhere else other than WM or it's 10:30pm & that is the only place open. (Sometimes Winn Dixie just doesn't cut it & they have occasionally closed earlier than stated & are pretty rude about it).

I really like the chorizo that Chisesi's produces, very spicy. I have never seen it sold retail. I buy it directly from Chisesi at wholesale and use it in my Southwest Grilled Chicken Pasta.

found another source. there is a little hispanic grocer on Cleary, next to the Tandoori restaurant btwn Vets and I-10. I bought some chorizo, and it comes in either little links or the big tube. they have dried spices as well. I also bought a box of mole that looks like those little drink boxes that you put a straw into...haven't cooked w/it yet, but will let you know how that works out. this place also serves cooked food.

and if you go to Tandoori, which the food is fantastic, and need a bevvie, the hispanic grocer has beer and a limited wine selection, in case you forget to BYOB.
