Okinawa

Post by Gourmondo »

This has nothing to do with the food of the new restaurant occupying the old Cuco's/Saltwater Grill space. I just find it rather strange that someone would name a restaurant after a place where nearly 300,000 people met their death in WWII, including 12,000 Americans, with countless thousands of others maimed for life. Kinda leaves me a bit anorexic. What's next, the Dresden Grill and the Dachau Cafe? Reminds me of when Ms. Gourmondo and I visited the snack bar at Buchenwald <shudder>. Maybe I am just dating myself, but this is one place I won't be taking my Mom, who lost some friends in that battle.

Maybe it's because the majority of the populace wouldn't have the slightest comprehension of the historical significance.

If it isn't covered by Oprah or referenced on American Idol, most people would think it's just a catchy Japanese name.

I would think not (although they may think it would be perceived as that).

My point is the general populace would think so.

Dirty little secret. This place is owned by Americans. Their next concept is the 9/11 Bistro.

I polled my DC's last night about the name. We were at Hana.

2 males - ages 53, 54
2 females - 38, 46

No one gave any thought to the name & asked me why I was asking.

Personally, not a good choice . . . . unappetizing.
