Lola Covington
So for my 24th birthday weekend, JAG and I decided to get out of the city. She made reservations at a bed and breakfast in downtown Covington. For the life of me, I can't figure out where JAG went at 3 am or what BTG is doing in the suite next door but I digress.
We read about Lola on Fatzo's board and the poster commented on how good the crabcakes are. We left NOLA around 12:45 in search of them. Due to the fact that JAG couldn't figure out how to work the GPS on my iPhone, we arrived at 2 pm and discovered Lola does not do crabcakes for lunch. What they do, however is some sensational sandwiches. I had the roast chicken, slaw, and BBQ sauce on homemade focaccia bread. Very fresh, very lively sandwich that got better as I ate it. JAG had some turkey avocado concoction also on a darker herbier focaccia. She was smitten. With the sandwich, not with me. They have a limited wine menu for lunch but the Hess Chardonnay went down easy.
So, we inquired as to dinner and they brought us a dinner menu as well as a winelist. JAG perused the dinner menu and pronounced it "awesome". So we made plans to return for dinner.
After JAG got bammed, we walked from our B&B over to the restaurant. I must admit I mock those of you who reside in the burbs, but ot was very pleasant to walk to dinner without the fear of getting shot.
The interior of Lola reminds me a little bit of Mat & Naddie's. Dimly lit, cozy
with plenty of wood all around. The menu can best be described as southern with some creole twists. There is a heavy emphasis on seafood and local fresh ingredients.
We split five courses. 3 apps, an entrée and dessert. The first course was an oyster trio. The first oyster was the best, it was baked and covered in a smokey, tomatoey cocktail sauce. The second oyster was a Brie and spinach. Very good but it lacked the pizzaz of the first one. The third was Rockefeller which was a pretty traditional take on the dish.
Next came two huge scallops that looked like they were enhanced by steriods. They were blackened on the outside, warm in the middle, on top of a fried green tomato and drizzles with a balsamc reduction. This dish was really good but I don't think it gelled well. Lots of good individual parts but very little harmony.
Our waitresss was waiting tables for the first time. She is studying to be an airline pilot. If I ever board a plane and hear my name is "captain x and I'll be flying you to St. Louis today." I'll be putting my life jacket on immediately.
Our next course was the aforementioned crabcakes. They were beyond amazing. They had a little kick to the them from some finely diced red pepper and were accompanied by a tangy remoulade. Absolutely terrific. Well worth the wait.
We finished the savory part of the meal with a crawfish and goat cheese risotto. Yum! It wasn't exactly what I expected. But it hit the right notes. Almost like an etouffe but creamier.
Our dessert was a mixed berry crumble, topped with an oatmeal crumble. Exactly something your grandmother would make. Since they thought it was my birthday, (it is on Monday, pm me for where to deliver my gift) they brought us two complentary flutes of champange.
Overall am awesome meal, highly recommended and only enhancex by the fact that after the meal, I got to walk back to the B&B with the prettiest girl in world.

Neither is JAG. It is in the old train depot across from the new courthouse. It is a stone's throw from the Ronald Reagan statue which is soooooo totally awesome, I cannot stand it.Yvette wrote:Loved the report.

Anyway, it sounds like JAG is helping BTG rearrange the furniture in his suite before we hit Del Porto tonight. Wow, I think BTG threw his back out or something. I have never heard a scream like that.

Wow, I am suprised to get mentioned so much in your thread. 
Sounds like I am going to have to take the wife to Lola for our next B&B trip.
As boring as it sounds, we have done the B&B thing twice in old town Covington at the Blue Willow. I love doing this. We park our car on Friday evening and don't get in it again until after walking back from church on Sunday morning.
I love walking to the bars and restaurants around that area.

Sounds like I am going to have to take the wife to Lola for our next B&B trip.
As boring as it sounds, we have done the B&B thing twice in old town Covington at the Blue Willow. I love doing this. We park our car on Friday evening and don't get in it again until after walking back from church on Sunday morning.
I love walking to the bars and restaurants around that area.
