Hub City is about as it sounds, diner stuff with some Lafayette spin thrown in. Also, while you're there, go one exit west of Layfayette to the Scott exit and go into the "Best Stop" just off the interstate. Don Menard makes the best boudin and cajun boucherie items there are. Yes it's better than Poche's.
Enjoy your visit and bring some stuff from the Best Stop home with you.

I second The Best Stop. Their smoked boudin is my number one favorite. And the craklins are damn good too.
I've been to Poche's 3 times (if it's the gas station place off the Breaux Bridge exit) and have been very dissapointed. And on one occasion when I got home my refrigerated boudin was spoiled and smelled like toe cheese.

I think Pamplona is the best restaurant in Lafayette right now. Charlie G's would be my second choice. Cafe V is good, but their menu has hardly changed in 20 years (even w/ the arrival of Patout).
I ate at Bistro Jolie a couple of months after its opening. Beautiful and comfortable space. The menu looked better on paper. The preparation and service were amateurish. Don't know if it has improved

Agree w/ posters in re: Best Stop. It is awesome.
I actually read about Pamplona and checked out the menu. Looks great, but I am trying to have South Louisiana food while there (Cajun/Creole). The tapas is something we can get elsewhere, so I nixed it. We're headed to Portland in September and Asheville in October, so I want to get as much good Southern food while I can before returning to my culinary wasteland here in Florida.
I do agree with you about the menu at Cafe V. Been going there for over a decade and it still looks the same. I guess that is why I am hesitant to go there for dinner. I just feel like it will be a stuffy atmosphere with the same white tablecloth setting as it has always been. Charley G's has always been one of my favorites.
Not even close to fine-dining, but Lafayette has some great "plate lunch" places that serve cajun/creole/soul food. Dwyer's, Laura's II, Creole Cafe and Creole Lunch House are a few of my favorites.
I agree that best stop is pretty great, but there are a bunch of nice cajun butcher shops in the area. I go with an ice chest and make a drive around and score a bunch of stuff to take home. Lots of fun.
Best cracklins is at Goulas Grocery south of Breaux Bridge. Eddie does each batch himself. Cajun cabins is ok and Poches is well not good. In my opinion Best Stop is even worse.
Rocky Sonnier is a buddy of mine... he was the "Cracklin' King" of Breaux Bridge. I've tried most of 'em, and think that he's still the best. His hogshead cheese is to die for!
