watering hole near Tulane Law School

Post by wish I never left »

So, the second stop on my trip to New Orleans this weekend will involve me cooling my heels for an hour or so Friday mid-afternoon in the vicinity of TLS.

I've been away long enough that I don't know what's open and right nearby (I'll be on foot and I won't be walking any further than I have to in the heat). Unfortunately, I never was buddy-buddy enough with any of my profs such that I could hang out in their office and partake from their stash...

Any recommendations on a cool dark place with stiff drinks and a sedate atmosphere where I can start getting ready for the night's fun?

The Boot. You might try The Palms on Freret and Broadway but I am not sure if they are open during the afternoon. Your only other options I can think of would be walking down Freret to Friar Tuck's or walking to Maple Street to Bruno's.

not sure about walking distance but Felipe's on S. Miro has 2 for 1 happy hour from 4 to 6pm Friday. and if you're a quart low, you can fill up on the melting pit of queso and chorizo. margaritas and red sangria are killer, and there is a good beer selection as well. Elio's Wine & Spirits is just across the parking lot.
cheers!
After Mon & Tues, even the calendar says W-T-F!

New Bruno's on Maple Street (catty corner from the old Bruno's) is a very acceptable sports bar catering to the Tulane community.

It's about 10 blocks to Cooter Brown's and about 6 blocks to Bruno's or to The Boot. The walk to Bruno's and to Cooter's would be mostly in the shade, a plus this time of year.

There is also an Irish (barely) Pub across the street in the old Vera Cruz location. Phillips is a little closer.

Is Philipp's open in the middle of the afternoon?

If so, that might fit the bill.

Thanks to all for the tips.

If you go to Philips, don't stay too late b/c it actually turns into a gay bar on Friday nights.

It looked open last time I drove by in late afternoon.

Is that true about the gay bar?
