Bon Ton

Post by EatinAintCheatin »

Going there for dinner tonight. I seem to remember some reviews of the place but a search turns up nothing. Anyone have any specific recs?

Crab au gratin and bread pudding. Simple and wonderful.

Crabmeat au gratin is a must but if you don't want to hit the cardiologist tomorrow, fish meunierre topped with crabmeat is outstanding. I love this place and rarely go there aside from a lunch about once or twice a year.

Sounds like we're gonna have to order the Crabmeat au gratin for the table as an app. Then I'll probably go with the some crawfish bisque (do they put real stuffed heads?) and then Redfish Bon Ton.

Thanks for the recs.

I grew up on the Bon Ton's catfish app and crawfish bisque. Family took the bus to the CBD every Friday to meet Dad for dinner. We knew we had a good bowl pf bisque when we could line the rim w/the empty heads that we had just sucked the stuffing out of.
It had been many yrs since going and decided to return, but paid for it dearly. Could have used some Lipitor and an angioplasty; Don't remember everything being so rich, or maybe I didn't feel it before I hit my 20's.
Enjoy!

We went. I had the crawfish bisque. It was very good, but only had one large stuffed head. It's served in a gumbo cup. I also had the Redfish Bon Ton, which was actually black drum (not that I care since black drum and redfish (red drum) are nearly indistinguishable). It was a perfectly cooked, large filet topped with a generous amount of crabmeat. The whiskey bread pudding was also very good.

Others had grilled gulf fish topped with shrimp (again black drum) - excellent and crawfish ettoufee.

Food - excellent
service - very good
atmosphere - good except for the cheap, uncomfortable chairs.

Two of my DC's were in from New York, had never been to N.O., and asked specifically "to eat some New Orleans seafood." Bon Ton worked perfectly in that respect. I know that Bon Ton is more Cajun (run by Bayou Cajuns) than Creole, but I found the fish dishes to fit the New Orleans style...

Recommended.

EC, you can still line the rim of your generous size bowl of crawfish bisque with empty, sucked out heads at Hymels in Convent, LA. And EAC, did y'all try Hymel's cf bisque when we met there? I'm wondering how you'd compare theirs with Bon Ton's.

Jeeves,

I have had Hymel's crawfish bisque a couple of times and yes, they do give you several stuffed heads. It's been a while since I've had Hymel's but I think it's sort of a split. Hymel's roux/liquid tasted better, had more seasoning and spice. But Bon Ton's had better head. :D

Bon Ton is $8.50 for a small cup
Hymel's is $12.95 (I think) for a large bowl. Used to be $8.95, right?
