Review of a crab dinner I attended this weekend

Post by BTG »

I had a great meal we had with a group of friends this past weekend. I apologize in advance for my lack of technical knowledge and bad spelling for some of the terms.

One of my friends is a seriously good cook and has at times cooked multiple course meals for us. It is a great way for us to get together and catch up, drink some wine, eat some great food.

Saturday night, five couples gathered at one house and we were each asked to bring a bottle of white wine in varying styles that cost about $20. The host provided three bottles of champagne instead of the wine, which was a nice touch.

*Appetizer#1 was marinated crab claws. This was not the garbage that some places put out that is sometimes previously frozen claws that has been sitting in their marinade for days. He mixed up the marinade on the stove and added the claws to allow them to coat for a few minutes.

* Next we had cold soup that had fennel, pureed potatoes and a few other items I forget. This was topped by lump crabmeat.

* The salad was a crab ravigote on top of romaine lettuce.

* Appetizer#2 was a pastry shaped like a horn and it was stuffed with a crabmeat stuffing of some kind.

* The entree was sushi grade lemon fish (or Kobia as some call it) sauteed and topped with light sauce and lump crab.

* The dessert was a circle of fruit tart. The fruit on top was made to look like a crab, with cut up strawberries being the main part. A few shavings of almonds added to look like claws.
I admit, that this was made by a pastry girl at his bakery, so he can't take credit for this one.

Words can't describe how much I enjoyed this. Each dish was paired with different kinds of white wine and it all worked perfectly. All together we had 8 bottles of wine and three bottles of champagne.
The cost of this was already going to be way lower than a restaurant meal (obvious I know), but it was helped even more with the fact that my boy got all of the food from a commercial distributor.

Why don't you just kick me in the gut while you're at it. That could be my choice for a final dinner.

Sounds really nice. I recently attended one of the Renegade Eat Club dinners at someone's house and it was quite amazing. Sounds like we had similar experiences.

There were 14 of us set up at 2 different tables, one in the kitchen and the other in the dining room at the other end of the kitchen. Seven at each table. I know the table I was at was the loudest....lol

Here was our menu:
RENEGADE EAT CLUB

2000 Domaine Ernest Burn Clos St Imer

Vendages Tardive Tokay Pinot Gris Goldert

Like you said BTG, this would have been way more expensive in a restaurant. My only regret was I didnt sneak over the next night for left overs. LOL

It's amazing how friends can pull off the perfect evening for us. I love good food, great wine and fantastic friends. And this was definitely a night of all three.

(I thought I already posted a review of this dinner????)

You sent that review to me via email, but I don't think you ever posted it. Delete it and give it it's own thread, because frankly, your dinner makes mine look like a Shoneys Buffet. :)

Oh and btw, dessert was outstanding Saturday night.:D

Dessert should always be outstanding.

It was something new to me, but plentiful and satisfying.
