Your missing-out if you've never tried Red Bean Ice Cream after Sushi -- it sounds gross but it is addictive. The Japanese have a thing about making ice cream out of all sorts of weird ingredients and their good at it.

Did not care for the red bean ice cream. Funny since I love the red bean smoothie at our local bubble tea place.

I can understand how some people wouldn't care for red bean ice cream, the beans do give it a somewhat chalky texture. My wife had to make me try it the first time because it sounded so disgusting.

Funny thing about the red bean ice cream -- after a few years of eating it all around the New Orleans area, I wrongly assumed it was a Japanese tradition that could be had anywhere but I discovered that Japanese people in other cities would most likely look at me like I was a nut when I asked if they served the stuff.

I have read some pretty interesting articles about the Japanese fascination with making ice cream from strange ingredients, though the red bean may be a Louisiana/Japanese thing, I'm not sure.

justagirl wrote:Isa, I like the food at Sushi Brothers a lot. A few times after it changed from Tokyo Bistro to Sushi Bros the service was bad but I never had a major problem like what you are saying. I have been in recently and the service was much much better. I'd say give it another shot if you are willing.

So Bam Bam, did you find something satisfying for dessert?
Thanks Jag, I love the food there too.
But good food does not deserve abuse.
And that's where it went the last evening we were there.

I miss Little Tokyo in that location when Victor was there.
Does anyone know what happened to Victor? Where did he land?

Bam! How could I forget?
Ah, Kanno has one of the best desserts for after sushi.

They have 2 . . .
one is a cold & very creamy, tiny square of chocolate _______.
I have no idea what to call it. I asked Elvis' wife once, she makes it.
She just giggled & said it had no name.

They also have a small tiramisu. Both are very good, but I love that chocolate dessert. It's about as big as a quarter. Very smooth, creamy, rich. It's just a little bitty something, but it is so right!

Red bean ice cream is not made with american red beans. It is made with Japanese red beans called adzuki. Ground and sweeten into a red bean paste used in some oriental pastries. I like those too

That's interesting; so it is actually Japanese in origin rather than a Creole/Japanese concoction. I wonder if the familiarity of red beans is what makes the ice cream more popular here than elsewhere? Stands to reason that people here would be more likely to give it a shot.

I doubt that most people in New Orleans try red bean ice cream. They think of red beans as a savory item not sweet. It may be there is a larger oriental population there that are use to that sweetness.

I had that for dessert yesterday Isa. Fan-freaking-tastic. Better than I remembered it.

Oh, now I'll need to get to Kanno!
Yep, JaG, I'd say that one little bite of cold, creamy chocolate is pretty chocogasmic.
