Some of my wife's students gave her a $50.00 gift certificate to Mandina's and she was itching to use it so we went by there for lunch today. I have to say that the food seemed better than before the storm.
She had her usual Trout Menuiere and I had a half and half plate. Both were over-sized to the point of being ridiculous. My shrimp or oysters were both fried just right and the wife has always sworn by their Trout Menuiere so when she offered her standard glowing opinion today, I didn't even look up from my plate -- this has been going on for years. At some point in her meal she has to find an appropriate place to announce, "Well, I have to say: they really have good trout."
The green salads that came before hand, were fresh and simple with their excellent Italian dressing. The bread pudding that came with the lunches, I would consider as good as any neighborhood joint, with a hint of rum in the sauce, raisins and peaches in the bread pudding. My only negative thought about it was: how and why on earth did I eat that after a monster platter of fried seafood?
The place was packed with the usual Sunday crowd. I noticed one old couple who actually brought their own seat cushions. That was a first.
We were both so stuffed when we left, that we decided to go down to the Quarter and walk it off, but after two hours of walking my stomach is still poking out. Remember to order main dishes to split at Mandina's.
Plus two iced teas: $48.07
Nice to see the old neighorhood mainstays still kickin.
Sunday lunch at Mandina's
Re: Sunday lunch at Mandina's
I think Mandina's is at its best with the separate Sunday menu. Last time I had the "Thanksgiving Dinner" plate. It was tasty and about three meals worth of food for even me.
