Zurich Classic-Food Review

Post by Oyster »

Since everyone was at JF, thought it is my duty to post about the foods at the Zurich Classic. Intended to do a "Top Ten" style list, but after burning it for 15 hours after just 5 hours sleep, consuming a few dozen beers, a few dozen Gentleman Jacks, one attempt at a Single Barrel JD on the rocks that was handed to me (which did not come close to being refreshing in the midday heat), more St Pauli's and Ezras & Cokes, and 3 for 1's at Razoos, while heading to Preservation Hall to catch Dell McCoury and the boys...well...I just may screw up the order. So, here is a brief rundown.

There were 9 vendors in the "Champions Club" where you get a wristband and get small plates. Here is a gist of my personal observations.

10) Pass. There were 10 items on wristbands, but no #9 existed in the booths for food. Someone step up to the "plate" please!

9) Ruth's Chris- The worst. A tiny piece of meat that fit on a roll 1/3 size of a Krystal bun (or you could have mashed potatoes). Overcooked to oblivion. A disgrace. Hopefully, Rib Room or Tujagues will see this post and come to the rescue!

8) Mr. B's - Grillades & Grits - Well, honestly, I wouldn't give a penny for any grit in the world. Have to say that I heard that these were "the best ever." Whateva! Eat mine.

7) Emeri's- Ribs and Asian Slaw-not bad. Can't say all plates would be bad, but just our two. The ribs were all bone, and mo meat. In a rack of ribs, you get some good and some not so good. The Asian Slaw was tasty, but the ribs are the luck of the draw when feeding hundreds.

That's about it for the losers. The rest were all winners.

6) Galatoire's- Shrimp Remoulade- Classic perfection. Nuff said.

5) Zea - Asian Shrimp - Asian theme runs deep in current food styles. Perfectly fried shrimp (2) atop an Asian slaw with a Hot Chili Oil. Delicious!

4) Arnaud's - Can't remember the exact name, but a cold Crawfish salad atop a fried green tomato slice. Wonderful contrast between the hot and cold. Wonderful flavors!

3) Drago's - What else but the definitive "Best single bite of food" in NOLA. Nice half dozen portion worth writing home about. Chatted with Drago about the old folks from the past. Someone talked to Tommy Saturday and he said they were grilling 5,000 oysters per day. I could have eaten half of that with no problem...

2) New Orleans Ice Cream - well, forgot about them and didn't mean to put them in this particular position, but mighty tasty. Shared the Coffee & Chickory flavor along with the Vanilla Bean flavor with wife, and both were great.

1) Outback Steakhouse - I cannot believe I am putting them in this place, as I am not much of a meat eater, but a seafood eater. However...the Pork Tenderloin was cooked to absolute perfection. Very moist & tender, no dryness at all. Cut with plastic fork. The Asian Slaw (a recurring theme) was wonderful, although loaded with Hot Chili Garlic Oil, it was a bit hot. Guess shows that some chains can come through while others cannot (i.e. Ruth's Chris). Served with about 5 slices of pork tenderloin (as opposed to 1 slice of overcooked beef from Ruth's). I was truly shocked. I actually did not plan to even try this one, but I had a heads up not to miss it from someone there on Friday. They were right. Great dish!

Sums it up. Ignore any typos/mispellings/gramatical errors. I have trouble after partying for 15 hours.:toast:

Oh! I understand that there was also a golf tournement going on while we were eating. Not sure, but that was the rumor...

Friend going to Charlotte next week for tournement there. Looked on their website about the food, and not hardly a mention at all!!!! Told him I bet the "Seafood" will probably be Mrs. Paul's Fish Sticks!:D

I only made it halfway through my wrist band. Drago's, Ruth's, Galatoire's, Emeril's, and I did try a little of the Outback pork and agree with your critique on it. I did make it to the bar many times for Bloodymarys and Bombay Gin and tonics. I was lucky with the ribs, 4 ribs with watermelon slaw and thought they were a hit. I went Friday and it seems I am missing one item, maybe there was a #9 Friday.

No #9 on Friday we used it for a 6 to get more asian shrimp. The pork from Outback was the best for me, & I ain't no fan of the joint.

The ribs from Emeril that I got were loaded with meat, luck of the draw Oyster.

I was in 18th hole skybox Sunday via a great gift from a friend of mine. Walked in very hungry, the first thing I see is a pan with about 4 dozen fried softshell crabs. Needless to say I made a hog of myself on that, topped off with coconut battered shrimp.

Great time @ TPC all weekend. Seems like some of us must be bumping into each other & don't even know it at events like this. I wonder how many of you I held a door for or even talked to. Sounds like Oyster was right at my side all weekend, maybe someday we'll figure it out.

We were at The Acme tent area Saturday. Wristband with: 4 drinks, app, raw oyster, entree, dessert. Food good, area nice-13th hole on one side and 17th on the other. Stayed for Better than Ezra-they played for over an hour and Kelly Gibson joined them at the end playing the cowbell. Also saw David Toms and did a little Go Tigers and got his autograph -although he knew I was standing there waiting for Better Than Ezra. He's a very nice guy-wish he could sink some more putts!!

Was that you in the bright green pants with the young hottie? If it was, I am jealous!

I took a break from the Champions Club Feed Me and walked over to the Acme Tent Sunday. Just had to try their fresh shucked. They were huge! Not bad at all. Slightly salty. Hit the spot on a hot day. Got a few drinks there then headed back over to the Champ Club.

I probably consumed a couple gallons of alcohol, and gained at least 5 lbs. between Friday and Sunday. Can't wait to do it again.

Sounds great Erster!!....my kind of day, good food and mass quantities of Jack. Your review of the top (or should I say bottom) three is about what I have always thought of them as restaurants to the tee (no pun intended).

I must say that I have become addicted to the Zea Thai (or Asian) sauce (you can buy it there ya know). I keep two bottles at home and one at work. Have yet to try it on anything I don't like it on.

As a side, is Kelly Gibson still playing golf? I don't get out much.

No bright green pants for me Oyster, or young Hottie. I had a middle aged hottie with me on Saturday, but Friday & Sunday rolling solo all day.

Tchop-- Kelly Gibson is not on any tour anymore. He must be close to 50 for the seniors tour, but would probably have a tough time qualifying. I think he must draw a paycheck from TPC (aka State of Louisiana)

Kelly Gibson is two years behind the late Tommy Moore which would make him 44-45 yo.
