Shrimp & Grits

Post by Gourmondo »

Grits are a fave of mine, although I need more carbs like a crackhead needs more rock. Nonetheless, I had tons of work in the office yesterday and today + taxes to do so I rationalized that they were essentail to my getting through the days. Saturday I had some at Blue Plate Cafe. They are around $14 there if I recall but they load in the shrimp. Their version comes in a good sized bowl with a good bit of cheese added in. The overall combo was really not quite to my taste for a reason I can't quite name. Held me 'til 7 PM however. As a side note, I often overhear some decent political gossip or Garden District "scandal" here on the weekend mornings.

Today I tried Refuel for the first time, having read the recent reviews here. I almost got the crabcakes, but got the S&G instead and I would say the kudos are well-deserved. Creamy grits with more typically flavored shrimp atop the plate, at $12, but with only four shrimp. I could have used about 15% more on the serving size and would have paid the extra. My main quibble with this place is the coffee service. The refills are free, but you have to get up and go to the counter to get more. One time they refilled it at the table, but I still had to get up and go to the coffee counter because there was no milk or sweetener on the table. This may sound trivial to you (and it is), but to someone who needs 4 cups of coffee to get going, it is consequential and irritating enough that I wouldn't make the place a regular spot for breakfast in spite of the food. I may try again for lunch, when coffee is no longer an issue for me.

We stopped-in for dinner at Ignacious(?) a few weeks ago and I had the Shrimp and Grits.

Cozy, country-store type atmosphere where they have Louisiana/Cajun/Creole food products stacked on shelves all over the walls--nice touch--but after I ordered the S&G, I saw the shelf stocked with Instant Grits and I asked my wife, "Does that say what I think it says?" "Oh, they probably use the real thing, those are only decoration." "Well, why in the hell would they decorate like that?" I asked her.

My suspicions were correct. True grit lovers can feel the texture and taste of a phony grit before it even hits their mouth--too bad I didn't pay closer attention to the signs before I ordered. I was sober, too.
