CyT Palo Alto "Reserve" Red Blend
From Chile, a very nice, high QPR red blend from Concha y Toro. Mostly Cabernet, with Carmenere and Syrah in the blend. Carmenere is that "lost" Bordeaux varietal that was grown for years in Chile mixed in with the Merlot, from which it is essentially visually indistinguishable. It is Carmenere that is responsible for the vegetal "bell pepper" notes so often found in Chilean reds. Only in the last decade, IIRC, was genetic testing done to identify Carmenere in Chile, and allow it to be vinified under its own name. The "Primus" bottling from Veramonte has been a popular Cab/Carmenere blend. The Palo Alto adds Syrah, and I think that's a good compliment/foil to the vegetal note of the Carmenere, which some people find off-putting. It adds some spice of its own as well. I have read tasting notes of it online, and quite fankly, I don't know where some of these guys come up with what they do. I'll just say it's a nice big red, with a lot of dark fruit and spice, and some chocolatey tannin, at a great price. Regularly $12, on sale now for $8 at Dorignac's.

I think I picked it up from the promo shelving in the front of produce. They usually order enough quantity of sale stuff to last the duration-- I think it ends 4/15. Lenny will probably restock tomorrow.

I got it on the wine aisle, so they probably do have some left in produce.Low-N-Slow wrote:I think I picked it up from the promo shelving in the front of produce. They usually order enough quantity of sale stuff to last the duration-- I think it ends 4/15. Lenny will probably restock tomorrow.

I predict this sleeper will appear on the next Wine Spectator Top 100 list.

Re: CyT Palo Alto "Reserve" Red Blend
Thanks for the info.
Hopefully we will see more wine talk (and food) with NOWFE in the near future.
I had to laugh at the "wine in the produce" remark. It reminded me of the old Schweggman's stores.
Shopper: "Excuse me, where can I find the cheese?"
Clerk: "Walk dat way and when you see da warshin machines take a right. If you hit da bank, toin aroun, you went too far! Cheese is aisle 14B, just past da fishing gear underneat the lawnmowers!"
Ahhh, how I miss them so.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
