Girl Scout Cookies

Post by JudiB »

Yay or Nay?

This might be heresy, but what do ya'll think.... are they really all that good? Are they too expensive?

I've always liked them, and for a few years was the "cookie mom" in my daughter's troop.... a troop that was one of the biggest sellers in the area, lol. I became an accountant overnight!

We always buy a few boxes every year, after all, it's a great cause and the kids are terrific.

This year my husband bought a box of lemon cremes... I took a bite and said... this tastes like Palmolive Lemon dishwashing detergent. So he took a bite of his and said very thoughtfully ... I guess I haven't eaten as much Palmolive as you have.... ROFL!

Anyway... maybe it's me, but the chocolate coconut ones were always my favorite, but they seem awfully heavy and chewy to me now.

And.... it's all just a getting a little too pricey for me.

What do you all think?

We got our delivery of three boxes today. My wife opens one and immediatly proclaims how much smaller the cookie seems and how much more expensive it is.
I got me a box of thin mints in front of the grocery stores last weekend and I am loving them.
Really nothing special, but like you said, it is for a good cause.

They've been getting smaller and more expensive for as long as I can remember. When I was in grade school, you could get hundreds for a dollar a box.

These days I kind of look at them the same way as "World's Best Chocolate" - just tell me how much $$ to give you and keep the product.

Thin Mints, a Diet Coke and Two Ibuprofen will cure an overhang.
I'm sure that's not the message the Scouts want to send; but being a former Scout, Scout's honor it works.
Not that my canteen had vodka in it...

Smaller and more expensive....YES......and as addictive as crack! But they are also getting way too politically correct on the boxes.

I had posted this on the other, other forum:

When my older sister, she is 45 now, was in the Girl Scouts they were required to dress in full uniform when they were selling their cookies. They also had a specific purpose for the money they were going to receive from their cookie sales. They also handled the money and gave change. While spending the day shopping in Saint Paul Minnesota one day last week, my Sweetie and I decided to buy a box of GS cookies from the first scout that we saw in uniform that solicited us to buy a box. It took most of the day before we saw two Brownies behind a table with their heavy winter clothes on that actually had on their uniforms. They had their sashes over their coats with their uniforms underneath. Understandable in the cold weather there. They had made signs and actually asked us if we were interested in buying a box of cookies. They told us the amount of our purchase and they took the money and told us "Thank you." All of the other scouts that we saw were in street clothes and had their parents soliciting sales while they just sat there. None of them had any purpose in mind for the money they were going to receive from the cookie sales. It is very much a "for the money" thing now with no concern for the girls learning to interact with people and to handle money and to run a business. And god forbid any kid in the USA learn any sort of responsibility. The parent that was with the girls that we purchased cookies from was a real sweatheart. He was coaching the girls very nicely with their sales and he was exceptionally nurturing and supportive to the two scouts. The girls were very young and a little bashful. I used to buy 100 boxes of the cookies each year divided between four or five different scouts before the price went up to $3.50 a box. The girls always enjoyed selling quantity over earning large revenue when I have asked them. My cousin in law works for the GS cookie distribution. She is dissapointed that they have gone to a "make money" scenario too. We always pay them with ones and quarters to help them keep stocked up on change. We watched several people pay them for one box using 20's. Just my cookie thoughts.........

LOL...I was one of the uniform wearing, case toting door to door in my neighborhood kind of girl scout! (I was a brownie too) My parents did not sell our cookies for us nor would they buy up boxes to help us sell more than anyone else. We earned badges and not trips with our cookie sales. Some of our sales went to the upkeep of our camp that we could go to for a week in the summer. The other portions went to various causes we chose.
I refuse to buy from a arrogant kid on my porch who doesn't even try to tell me about her troop, where she is from.....it is like on Halloween, do not come and ask for candy at my house if you are not dressed up to trick or treat. ( I am not talking about having to have store bought costumes, I never had any growing up, but we made something every year out of something)

pet peeve.................

If he has daughters, they have probably won prizes for sales.
