Great Sack of Oysters!

Wednesday I picked up a sack of oysters from Capt. Sids in Bucktown.

For $44 this was some of the best oysters I can remember....all salty, brown edges and about a third were large. These got charbroiled Wed. night and yesterday.
I still have leftovers after 2 parties!

Was in Quarter today, and took a peek at the enormous lines at Acme and Felix. Think I will wait a couple of days...

Noticed that the old Tortirici's on Royal has been converted into an oyster house...think it was Royal Oyster House, or something like that. One dozen...$14!

I will stick with the sacks...like last weeks...right off the boat in Buras. Yum!

Dennis at Village Inn in River Ridge has been getting his oysters straight off the boat in Buras too. I don't know his supplier but they were excellent. I think they're selling them for $6.50/dz on the half shell. They even shuck for their poboys and fried oyster plates.

I also had a few dozen at Harbor Seafood/Fisherman's Cove in Kenner. Very salty and good though much smaller than the Buras ones.

As I stated before, I grew up on oysters from the Buras area, more specifically from our camp on Bayou Cook. I've always thought that area was the best. And this year is no exception.

Damn...now I need some oysters today...

Well, I usually only get "half sacks." And it depends on where you buy them. But it's usually either 100lbs. OR 10 to 12 dozen. Of course, the places that sell by count may throw in a few extras if the size is small.

But as a gauge, last time I bought a half sack from Village Inn Dennis filled my 48 quart ice chest nearly to the top. They were medium to large and I know I had at least 12 dozen. Cost was $24.

EAC, you are getting a great deal from Dennis. 12 dozen is way more than half sack. Sack usually 15-18 dozen. Shucked, you get a gallon and almost a quart from a full sack. On the boats, after you bust up the clusters (culling), you dump them in a wire basket, which is larger than a regular bushel, and that is a sack. The ones bought in Buras were $30/sack for in clusters, or $35/sack for individuals. They were huge and salty.

I remember our post about the Empire area a few years back. We were just up the road at Port Sulphur with beds in Bay Lanaux and De la Chanier heading toward Bay Adam. Over 800 acres, fish 20 sacks per day. In 1975 when shut down, were selling for $6.50 sack.
