Pascal's Manale

Post by Gourmondo »

Another neighborhood outing for last night's meal: apps- fried mozzarella, fried eggplant with marinara sauce. The latter was especially tasty. For salads we had the caprese and Manale salads -very good. The entrees were NY strip (very good) and a drum filet garnished with several bbq shrimp and served in the bbq shrimp sauce. The latter arrangement sounded better to me than it actually tasted. That sauce just does not pair well with the fish. Good french breab, attentive service. The food here continues to be OK, but I find myself thinking it should be 10-20% cheaper than it is. If it were not close to the house I would not return. It seems to live mostly off the tourist trade these days.

I agree with your assessments. Every time I go, I always leave thinking either the food should be better or the prices cheaper. I've never had a bad meal there, but I've also never had an inexpensive one.

I have never had a good meal there. The seafood is consistently terrible. Green food coloring mixed into bread crumbs and served on an oyster shell does not Oysters Rockefeller make!

I go there for oysters all of the time, as it's conveniently located a couple of blocks from my house. I like Thomas, the shucker, as he will load you up if he knows that you tip right and aren't too pushy. Probably my favorite quick dozen in town.

On the other hand, I haven't ventured into the dining room in years. My swimps are better than theirs and nothing else on the menu is particularly appealing.

I do, too and that's all. Well, the beer's nice and cold, too! The ersta shucka (Knows me long time, yeah!) is generous and is cognizant of just what size erstas I like. The place is a few blocks from where I work and I can sneak over there several times during a 12 hour shift.

The BBQ schwimps aren't the same as when Richie Collin (New Orleans' very best food and dining critic evarrr!) first touted me onto Pascal's in one of his books or newspaper articles....."The portions tend to be enormous, especially the barbecue shrimp....." Well, the portions aren't as enormous as they once were, the recipe seems to have changed significantly, and the price parallels Mother's shrinking sized/higher priced/lower quality po-boys.

too many rules...tried to order a bottle of champagne at the bar, and you would think I wanted plutonium. couldn't bring my champagne to the oyster bar, couldn't bring the oysters to my champagne being held hostage at the bar, was not allowed to get a table to enjoy said champagne and oysters together...wasn't in the rule book, I guess...went to Clancy's and had great apps, entrees, lots of champagne and wine and frozen brandy alexanders...at the bar!
