Thoughts from a Foodie...

Post by JudiB »

While my husband enjoys a good meal, and good cooking, he's not a "foodie". Not by any stretch. He eats to live, and luckily, or unluckily for him... I love to cook, and do it rather well most of the time.

So I was thinking, I know for a certainty that he's not a 'foodie'... but what is a foodie?

I think a foodie is someone who remembers what they ordered the last couple of times in any given restaurant. (Tom never remembers, but not only do I remember what I ordered, I usually remember what he ordered).

A foodie is someone who enjoys trying new recipes, restaurants, cultural cuisine experiences. A non-foodie would just prefer to have a known and comfortable meal.

A foodie plans meals in advance, often eating one meal while thinking of what the next will be comprised of.

A foodie is someone who enjoys chopping seasonings.

If a foodie enjoys something new, he or she will try to re-create it in their own kitchen... and not get too discouraged when it doesn't turn out right.

A foodie looks at table arrangements, china, place mats, glassware, dining room tables, dining chairs, etc - in ads in the Sunday paper.

A foodie would rather not eat than eat StoveTop. LOL!!!

What's the definition of "foodie" to you?

LOL Oh hon, you hit it on the head. As this is our first year in a new home...with a new dining room table. I've been sitting here this morning multi tasking...making my grocery list that usually starts 5 minutes after I get home from the grocery store....looking at the holiday decorations in the Michael's and World Market ads..looking at dishes on Macy's website. I'm trying to decide what kind of dishes I want to go with my new table. I've been sitting here envisioning the house decorated for Thanksgiving or Christmas...trying to decide which route I want to go. For the last several days I've been compiling a list of cookies and candies that I will make for the holiday season. I'm doing goody baskets for everyone...thought I'd include some local coffees..then making the rest.

We spent yesterday on the porch at Crazy Johnnie's...ladywhowaits, Doug and I...we had been sitting there having way too many margaritas and eying the garlic mashed potatoes that were on several trays coming out of the kitchen. We finally had them...and they were just so-so. Lady had been planning a meal for us...osso bucco..and had been planning on a risotto to go with it...well, this morning in her email..she has decided to do garlic mashed potatoes instead. That..my friends..is a foodie. Yestedays potatoes didn't satisfy us..so she will take care of that!

I know that when she and I get together we bore Doug after a bit. You can see his eyes glaze over. Doug loves food and loves to cook...but he would be perfectly happy with a steak and baked potato..or a burger and fries...7 days a week.

I spend way too much time pouring over old magazines that I should have thrown out months ago...but nope..I can't do it..there is usually some recipe in it that I plan on trying eventually. I get several magazines a month...I will finally decide which ones to copy...and then I pass the magazines on to her.

We had been planning on going to a new grocery store this past week and never really could get our schedules aligned..we had both been excited about going to a new store...you never know ..they may have something wonderful that none of the other umpteen grocery stores in the area have;)

That is a foodie.

When I am in the mood to cook, which is often, it doesn't matter if I'm hungry or if anyone is here to eat it, I'm creating something wonderful. It's therapy for me to cook. I love to create meals. I love to go out to eat and see what chefs are doing. I'm amazed and excited everytime I see something I've never seen before. I try to re-create it as soon as I can. I love to share my creations.

I don't eat simply to sustain life, I eat to enjoy life that much more.

A foodie is someone who talks during a meal about the next meal they will have/prepare. And maybe the one after that.

It's amazing how our language continues to grow and evolve. In the early 80's a "Foodie" was a metro/cosmopolitan term used by some food critic up north (NYC?) to describe people that followed only new and trendy restaurants, making them famous for a while, and then moving on to the next "thrill". They hardly ever ate the food, just tasting, as it would be gauche to "finish" the meal. These people are still at it but they aren't called foodies anymore since "foodie" means something else entirely now.

It was not a nice term at the time.

All of the above plus the following:

Anxiously awaits opening Thursday's newspaper to check Marcelle Bienvenue's column and the local grocery store adds for what's on sale.

Mulling over some ideas and menus that takes advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetable and whatever seafood or meats that are on sale and look good.

I never knew this, but then again, we live in N.O., not NYC & I was only 20 in 1980. What did I know?

Well, I knew at that time that I did fit the description of what is being called a Foodie in this thread! I've been a Foodie my whole life.
Not the NYC kind, but what we are describing.

Spudly, was there a term to describe what we are talking about that didn't have a negative connotation or described good folks who just really enjoyed food & I guess were considered to be obsessed by those who were not?
I was subscribing to Gourmet & Bon Appetite back then & for the life of me, I do not remember any buzz words. Frankly, I don't really care anyway, but now you have me thinking why I can't remember!

I've been labeled a foodie, gourmet, gourmand, bon vivant and maybe some other things too. I really don't care one way or another but still, now you really have me wondering. There's no way I'd consider myself a snob . . . but then again, I wonder if any snob might give it that much thought! :whip:

And what are these trendy folks who were once called foodies now being called?
