Any suggestions on where to eat in that area? I seem to remember a restaurant in Mobile, possibly owned by a former Saints player, or maybe it came to me in a dream. Any attractions I might not know about? Thanks for the help!

Fort Morgan is about an hour and a half from Mobile. Much closer is Gulf Shores (about 15 min) and Orange Beach/Perdido Key (about 30 min). Also, further inland is Foley. It's been a while, but I can't recall anything special in that area. Any info I'd have would be about 7 years old.

Whoa an hour and a half? That would be quite the drive. Thanks!

Unless you meant Spanish Fort?

No, it's Ft. Morgan. I didn't realize Mobile was that far away but I guess it is since you have to go all the way around the bay.

I can't go to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach without going to the Gulf Shores Steamer. It's one of those places I fell in love with about 20 years ago and although it's not quite the same, I still love it.
I can't figure out why we can't get Royal Red Shrimp here but they are fantastic.
I think the owners have a sister restaurant called Ribs and Reds nearby.
The Steamer is located at the junction of 59 and 82 behind an Alvin's Island or some other souvenir shop.

Me either! But...you can get some right over the line at the Jourdan River Steamer if you ever find yourself in The Kiln area!

Steamed Seafood:
Served with house salad, butter for dipping, corn and new potatoes.

Dungeness Crab - 1 cluster, 2 clusters or 3 clusters...
King Crab - Fit for a King! 1 pound or 1 1/2 lbs. your choice
Royal Red Shrimp - One pound serving...or bump it up to a 1lb and 1/2
Alaskan Snow Crab Clusters - 1 cluster, 2 cluster or 3 cluster
Great Big Jumbo King Crab 1 Lb or 1 1/2 pounds, Fit the King or the Queen

Heck, it's not that far away. You could probably run there!

Summer before last we went to Orange Beach (very sorry I didn't look into dining more closely before going, that was the lowpoint of the trip) You have a good idea, asking for suggestions here. I understand maybe my experience could have been a one time thing or the norm. To be fair I only went once, but it was enough for me. I posted this on chowhound at the time:

from Chowhound:
I went to Reds and Ribs? in Orange Beach AL last week. Service was prompt and friendly. The Fried mushrooms were fresh and very well done. The shrimp WERE THE WORST I HAD IN MY LIFE. They must have been cooked/steamed and flogged for hours. Once I opened the shell, it had shriveled to half the size of the shell itself, and the shrimp crumbled apart in my hands.

Well, to get you started, here are a few possibilities.....again, nothing memorable, but this is probably 7 years ago:

Gulf Shores

Gulf Shore Steamers (as mentioned by Roux) - I remember now, and they were pretty good.
Lulu's - wide open restaurant/bar on the Intracoastal

Orange Beach

Louisiana Lagniappe
Cafe Grazi
Back Porch
Tacky Jacks - better place to drink than eat
Gauthier's - a bit upscale

Thanks y'all. We went to Lulu's about six months ago. I really like the atmosphere and there's free internet from what I was told. I have found some places on line, like the Oyster Bay Seafood and Ole Tyme Market, which I plan to check out. There are birding trails near where we will be and there's an old fashioned ice cream parlor. I think I'm going to find more things to do than time will allow. I am taking notes so if anyone has anything to add please do so. I have a few weeks before we leave. I'm adding your suggestions to my list.
