Red Robbins RIP

Red Robbins, late 1960's basketball player with the old ABA New Orleans Bucs died. He played at the old Loyola Field House that was home for the Bucs. At one time in the late 1970's he had a sports shoe store in Mandeville. It seems he stuck around N.O. after his basketball job. The only food I can remember at the games were popcorn, hot dogs, and beer. And it did not cost $10.

Thanks for the info, and thanks for a long ago memory recall. If I recall correctly, Red was 6'8", and under 200 lbs. But he could hit shots from the outside, and averaged about 15 pts/gm. Could hit from the 3 point line too, which was a great addition the ABA gave to the NBA, along with Connie Hawkins and Dr. J! Red was a very good player, and fun to watch. He played college ball at Tennessee.
I went to a Bucs game where the first 100 people received a Red White & Blue ball as a give-away. (Way before bobbleheads!) I was in that number. Cheesy ball, but it sure was pretty! When they went to the playoffs, I was an usher at the game. Not sure why you needed ushers at the Field House, but I think some of the people comming to the game had never been in any kind of sports arena in their lives. The building was a box, and if you could count rows, and seats...you were home free. Many people, however, could not...
I don't think they even gave us a hot dog and coke, which were about $0.10 at the time, but we were just glad to get in free (which probably saved us about $3.50!)
Saw many good concerts at the Field House too...

He was a neighbor of mine and I can add he was a nice guy with a wicked sense of humor. He'll be missed.
