finger sandwich

Post by LauraMc »

I'm invited to a party this weekend and was asked to bring finger sandwiches. Since I'm from Vicksburg, this means tomato sandwiches on round bread, home made pimento cheese, and maybe a chicken, shrimp or egg salad. My husband says I don't know what I'm talking about. He says here they expect sandwich meat like roast, turkey, ham, etc.
I was thinking tomato sandwiches on bunny bread, pimento on small rye squares, shrimp salad on triangles of bread and some roast beef & swiss with horseradish mayo on white.

Your husband is right. The most exotic we do with finger sandwiches is chicken salad or tuna salad. And don't make them yourself. Pick up a tray from Rouse's or somewhere else (most people assume that's what you're going to do anyway). The people at the party would not appreciate all of the effort you put into them.

Laura, I'd be thrilled to go to a gathering & have your offerings.
What kind of party & who are the attendees?

If you're going to a game or something, the standards are:
roast beef, ham & cheese, turkey, chicken salad.
Tuna & egg salad show up for variety.

Upon commenting how good his sandwiches were, an Old New Orleans caterer once gave me his recipe for the more than just mayo spread on the bread for the ham & roast beef:

1/8 part Creole Mustard
1/4 part Yellow Mustard
1 part Mayo

They are easy enough to make & less expensive that way.
Use an electric knife if you have one. I would not hesitate to make my own.

On the WB, folks use A & W Caterers or Capdeboscq for finger sandwiches.

Partially freeze the bread before putting the sandwiches together-- it helps the electric knife cut more cleanly. By the time you're all done, it will be thawed.

In Merry Ole England, white bread with the crusts cut off, very thin brushing of Salad Cream (sorta like mayo), and very thin slices of (English) cucumber. Not filling at all.

I asked around today and the general consensus was just get a sandwich tray from somewhere. They said my idea of finger sandwiches is what they call tea sandwiches. Oh well, much easier.
The crowd is residents and pharmacists. I think I might go with a tray from Martin's or does The Cellars of River Ridge do trays?

For finger sandwiches, Martin, Rouse's, Robert's are pretty much all of equal quality. Don't spend the extra $$$ to go to a "better" place - it's not worth it.

Spend 45 minutes making your own. People do notice and they remember it forever. Good or bad. You make the impression of caring either way.
