Ask and you shall receive.....

I received an email the other day saying that my Petunia's $25 certificate (THAT I BOUGHT FOR $2, which I think makes a net of $23 gain) was not longer valid. I was allowed to swap it for a coupon from any participating restaurant. Well, my wife and I go to Mimi's in River Ridge occasionally and I saw them on the list.

Mimi's is running a small plate special: 3 small plates and either a glass of wine or a bread pudding for $25 (imagine that, buy one + $2, get one free).

As is often the case, we ordered the same thing for a couple of small plates.

Both had:

Table Bread - Served promptly but nothing to write home about. Tasted like La Louisiane french bread of which I am not a fan.

Panne Eggplant and grilled Jumbo Gulf Shrimp served with herb aioli and peccorina romano. This was an excellent dish. 4 big shrimp perfectly grilled and a large medallion of eggplant (3-4" in diameter) cooked well and not at all bitter. The sauce complemented both items well and was not "too wet" or overpowering. Just enough sauce to add flavored moisture. Recommended

Jumbo Lump Crabcake atop a bed of fried spinach and topped with a remoulade sauce. A very nice dish with a generous size crabcake packed with crabmeat. I liked the fried spinach, with was crispy but not greasy. Remoulade sauce was good too. Another winner dish.

I had:

Crispy Oysters atop a bed of fried spinach accented with bleu cheese and a light drizzle of crystal hot sauce - This dish was lame. Oysters looked like bay scallops (in size) and I couldn't find any remnants of bleu cheese. Not recommended.

Bread Pudding - average at best, not recommended.

Wife had:

Shrimp Remoulade Salad with avacado, mixed lettuce, chopped eggs, celery, sweet corn and heirloom tomatoes. This was another star dish. It was big enough to be an entree salad. It had 4 more large shrimp and a half of avacado. Definitely recommended.

Glass Pinot Grigio - Acceptable house wine.

I also ordered a Blanton's neat before dinner. It was a very generous pour.

Service was excellent as was the timing. Each plate was brought out separately with plenty of time allowed to relax and enjoy.

Recommended.

I like the 3 for $25 that places are running. It's usually more exciting then just and entree IMO.

Thanks for the review.

Did your wife tell you I saw her smiling face at Jazz Fest :)

JAG,

Yes, she told me. She's a Jazz Fest aficionado. She can dance and party in the sun way longer than me. Luckily, her Godchild/nephew and sister were looking to go so I got a pass.
