Good, inexpensive bachelor party recommendations in the Quarter
My brother in law is going to a bachelor party in the city in a few weeks.
I'm trying to give him several recommendations for some casual places and some slightly fancier, but not formal places.
In addition to probably being limited to the FQ, CBD, and Warehouse District, they are probably also going to be pretty limited on what they can spend.
For casual, I'm suggesting Stanley, Redfish Grill, Port of Call, and Cochon.
For slightly more upscale, I'm suggesting La Boca for steaks, GW Fins* (b/c I had a great meal there the last time I was in a bachelor party in New Orleans), Bourbon House, and then I'm kind of stuck.
Any other obvious ideas I'm overlooking for either casual or upscale?
*I hesitate to suggest even a place like GW Fins, b/c these guys will laugh at the idea of paying $25+ for Red Fish or Black Drum when they can pull the same fish out of the Gulf for next to nothing.

Those fish that can be caught for next to nothing are more expensive than you think. It takes some $$$$ to go fishing offshore. And, you have to clean and cook the fish, something Tenney/Fins is pretty good at.

I wouldn't take Ronald McDonald to Cochon
Take them down on Frenchman St. and they won't know where they are in a couple of hours.

Turbodog,
I agree with you. Fishing isn't cheap or easy* and the preparations at GW Fins are quite a bit more elaborate than what you will get in a home kitchen. My point was to point out that these guys might not appreciate this difference when they're looking at a menu online and I tried to do that in a tongue in cheek way.
ratcheese,
I'm surprised you have negative feedback on Cochon. I've eaten there twice and both times I was very happy with just about everything I was served.
I hope these guys do make it down to Frenchman St., but (thankfully for my liver) I won't be along for the ride.
* We usually are fishing in little bays off the gulf in southern Texas.

I think I'm the only person on Earth who doesn't like Cochon. Not really. Our entire party disliked it. Seriously. Then again, it was up against Bayona and Lillette on that particular weekend, and it didn't hold.wish I never left wrote:Turbodog,

In general, Cochon is vastly overrated. It may be okay if you know what it is and what you want, but to compare it to the good places--no.

Be careful about writing under the influence lest you find yourself apologizing for crass statements--like me.ratcheese wrote:I think I'm the only person on Earth who doesn't like Cochon. Not really. My comments on Cochon seem overly harsh, today. I can see how people like it--but you need to be into Pork--as the Pig sign out front would signify.
Take away the pork, and you have food that can be found anywhere in town.
I think my disappointment with Cochon (aside from the service) stemmed from the almost universal praise I heard prior to our experience--which put Cochon on the same level of quality as the best in town, and that is just wrong in my opinion.
If your peeps are into Pork, you'll be okay there.

That's pretty funny, ratcheese. The one dish I had there that I didn't like was the brisket. When I mentioned that to the waiter, he said that if you were eating at a restaurant named 'pig' you might want to stick with that.
That being said the fried liver dishes and the fried oyster dishes I've tried there were pretty tasty.

That is really funny that he said that to you.

Does the "non-fan" opinion come from anyone because of the un-cushioned wooden chairs?
As John Wayne once said: "Life's tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid."
