Breakfast Tour: Bluebird

Post by bam bam »

I apologize for not continuing the breakfast tour as I was in Mississippi for a week and dined once at Slim Goodie's (but need to go back before I post a hilarious yet critical review), but this morning I had a breakfast at the Bluebird.

I should confess that during part of time as a New Orleanian, I was a Bluebird-aholic, eating there several times a week. Then I enrolled in Tulane Law School. As (I guess) a semi-native at that point and combined with my boisterous personality and the fact that I went home with two girls the same night I met these guys, I became the de facto leader of my law school krewe. So naturally, I took them one morning for breakfast at the Bluebird and EGADS!!!!!, the gnarliest, nastiest, non-shaved, uses a burlap sack to wipe her ass, liberal, enviro-chick in our class worked as a waitress there.

It literally soured me on the place so much that since 1997 and regardless of the fact that this chick hasn't probably set foot in the place since the dawn of the millenium, I have not eaten there in over 12 years. I also moved to the Carrollton area and the since departed but not forgotten Nick's on Carrollton became my usual a.m. hangout.

Well, this morning I walked in with an open mind, purged of any memories of my law school classmate's unshaven arm pits hair peeking out from under her halter top. The service was fairly cool, although it did appear that this waitress had bathed sometime since 2002, which is an improvement. I ordered an omelet with bacon, tomatoes, grilled onions (a nice touch) and jack cheese. It came with a side order of grits and rye toast.

The omelet was not exactly to my liking, as they really skimped on the cheese. But as mentioned the grilled onions were a nice touch. The grits were subpar, very coarse, not very creamy and nowhere near the Refuel (which by far as the best grits in town) nor Huevos (the undisputed number 2 ). The rye was toasted sufficiently and the coffee was pretty good.

I could definitely go back and I recommend the place but without any enthusiasm.

Don't bother recommending it as it is closing for good next month

Interesting, I was there today as well. The place was never spectacular, but consistently pretty good. It was always like visiting an old friend - - who is now dying in a month.

Are you trying to bait me into a grits-off?

I'd say that's an excellent description.
I had breakfast there once a week with the same group of friends for a few years. And other times as well.
I haven't been in a couple of years, so I think it's time for one last visit.
Maybe two.

Thanks for the reminder.

I haven't tried Huevos, but so far, you are correct sir. The best.

For a second I thought we were talking about another brakfst "bird" that I remember well.

The Hummingbird on St. Charles was a good breakfast place I remember from the 60's...

pardon my hijack. i had the best breakfast of my life last week at tableau in the wynn las vegas. perfect pancakes and omlette. fresh squeezed screwdriver. best breakfast service ever. also, the encore is better than wynn, imo. rooms, casino, pool....top notch.
