I lived near here for many years. I ate there fairly regularly until I moved to the LGD. While I thought it was good, I never thought it was great. Hence I probably have eaten there twice in the seven years since I moved.

Well, Panola St still looks the same with its dining room tables and seat yourself casualness. However the menu has undergone a significant upgrade. Several types of eggs benedict are featured including two poached eggs over a crab cake. The crab cakes are good and flavorful.

Several new omelet combos have been added to the 3 cheese. I particularly enjoyed the Virginia Dare omelet, bacon, cheddar and avocado.

The coffee sucks and the grits are little more than store bought made with water.

Regardless, Panola St Cafe gets a strong recommendation.

This used to be a place I frequented for late breakfast when I also lived in the area. It was always a good place to go with a group during a class. It's been some time since I've moved out of the neighborhood as well & stopped going.

Basic breakfast was always good . . . and you're right the coffee always did suck, so I knew to get tea.

However, the biggest pleasure I always got from going to Panola Street Cafe was seeing Mary & Ernest Hansen & having an opportunity to chat.
The second was supporting a local biz & the typical N.O. flavor the space provided. It was always comfortable.

I'm glad to read your report, Bam, and will put them back on the breakfast roster to try the crabcakes!

We are talking about Riccobono's, right?
If not, they are also on Panola and have a Virginia Dare omelet.

I like it, too. I agree that is a nice, neighborhood place to have an above average breakfast.

Yesterday, I did feel like I had paid more than it was worth. I don't know if their prices have gone up since I was in there last, like everything else, or if I just never paid attention before, but I had Eggs Sardou w/potatoes, no meat, coffee, and milk. It came to $18+.

I know, you're saying I had Eggs Sardou, though. But, come on, this was defiantly a neighborhood version of that dish--sort of like satisfying a Mexican craving at Taco Bell. Maybe that's not out of line, anymore, I don't know.
