Group: "Cap'n Al's Seafood" on Annunciation seems to have bitten the dust. The sign on the building now says "Firehouse Restaurant." Anyone know anything about it?

Not surprised. We tried Big Al's not long after it first opened, and it was nothing like their sister restaurant, Big Al's in Houma. It seemed as though the New Orleans store was just a half-assed attempt at expanding the Big Al's brand. We found it to be over-priced and under-managed. Best of luck to whoever comes in after them.

I drove by over lunch. There's nothing in it except some tables up against the wall. There were no people and no tables. I suspect this one is a while from opening.

that location was formerly known as Fire. is it perhaps an old sign from the previous tenant?

I thought about that. The old restaurant had a sign that said "Fire, A Restaurant" if I recall correctly. Then there was a sign, and only that sign, that said Cap'n Al's Seafood. That sign is now gone and there is a new looking one that says "Firehouse Restaurant." It's got to be new.
I drive that way to work in the morning and pass the spot most days so I notice the changes.

The original Big Al's in Houma was consistently good for years. When they began expanding, their quality fell dramatically. When dining at their two restaurants in Houma, you have a 50/50 shot at good food. The most consistent problem that we have seen is that they overuse their fish fry. It becomes very clumped up, but they continue to use it. They use old oil for frying too.
