I have been asked to recommend NO restaurants for a couple of 20ish uptowners, relatively new to the area, who are vegetarians. No meat, or seafood, but will eat dairy products. I named a few places, Patois, Bayona and Lilette, but was wondering if someone has suggestions for places I, a definite carnivore, have not considered. The couple appreciates good food, but neither are dedicated gourmet/foodie types. Any suggestions?

Most (all) restaurants have non meat/seafood choices I find in my own experience.
Also Asian restaurants do a good job with vegetables, sauces, tofu etc.

I read a story about the chef at Marigny Brassiere (sorry, can't recall his name) being a former vegetarian for about 8 years. Sure he could fix them up with something great.

Best part is, it puts them in the heart of some of the best music venues for some great entertainment.

I have a friend who is a vegetarian. She hasn't lived here in years but comes back for Jazz Fest. I think she eats more the day we go to JazzFest than she does the rest of the year. She goes from booth to booth and gets all the veggie dishes.
I never even think about her being a vegetarian when we go out to eat. She has never been to a restaurant here that couldn't come up with something. The easiest is Lebanon Cafe though. Most of the Mediterranean restaurants have entrees that are meat/seafood free. Also, Sara's uptown has a few.
I don't know if it's still there but there used to be a vegan restaurant on Magazine. I can't remember if it was named Vegetarian Restaurant or had a huge sign saying it was. It was near Jefferson & Magazine.

My good friends swear by Dick and Jenny's for vegetarian entree's. Give a call ahead to see what's featured on the menu as they change it regularly.

My favorite pizza happens to be vegetarian even though I am not. Slice Pizzaria on St. Charles makes a pizza called "The Fresh" that will knock your socks off. If your guests want something fast and inexpensive this is a great place!

There is a new vegetarian restaraunt on Esplanade called Bamboo. It is supposed to be really good. They do vegan/the whole works. It is where the Thai place used to be years ago. Just before Frenchman.

My question is, why bother. By being vegitarian, you are already limiting your self as a fooodie. If you are truly interested in great food, why would you limit yourself? I understand to some it is an ethical thing (I am so glad my ethics are not so strong), but that again is a choice. You can choose what you believe to be the right ethical course, but the flipside is you are limiting your potential enjoyment of food.

to some, food is no big deal, it is just to sustain oneself. That's fine, if thats for you. It is not for me.

Saturday night, I had a fabulous paneed veal dish, with a sauce with mushrooms and crabmeat on top. So good. and veal is probably the worst offense to the "ethical" diners. I felt no remorse as I cleaneed my plate (I was at Nuvolaris' the dish awas a nightly special).

If I were a vegitairan, but ate dairy, I would eat a lot of pizza, from a high quality pizza maker (few of those around here).

My guess is most vegitarians voted for Obama, so I will now blame them for this president.
