Fat Hen Grill
Fat Hen Grill
Just got back from breakfast at the new Fat Hen Grill on Veterans. Overall, an acceptable experience, but a couple of problems. Wife ordered eggs over easy and when plate came, both eggs were broken and everything on the plate was soggy. Daughter ordered scrambled eggs and it looked like they were cooked on a 'flat top" and sliced up. They were not light and fluffy, and almost looked like fettuccini on the plate. She didn't care for them, but she did enjoy the bacon and biscuit. I had the womlet and although it was very good, I will probably not try it again. The waffle was light, sweet, and fluffy, and the omlet was tasty, but since I prefer savory over sweet, the combination didn't do anything for me. Portions are huge and the food came out hot.
We will go back to try other dishes (burgers, sandwiches, etc.) but will not be in a rush to return for breakfast, at least for a month or two until they iron out some of the "opening issues".
OTOH, service was very good and I do see a lot of potential in this place. It's a bit of a drive since I live close to Causeway Bd. and the Veterans location is close to Williams Bd., but I'll make the trip again.

Thanks for the report Dilfan.Dilfan wrote:Just got back from breakfast at the new Fat Hen Grill on Veterans. Overall, an acceptable experience, but a couple of problems. Wife ordered eggs over easy and when plate came, both eggs were broken and everything on the plate was soggy.
I don't understand how the waitperson could possibly deliver this plate, much less the kitchen send it out.
I would have sent it back.

Dillfan, have you been to Peppermill lately for breakfast? I went yesterday for the first time in a while and I really enjoyed it. I had the eggs bennedict which came with toast and hashbrowns for around $11. The two eggs with toast/biscuits and hashbrowns start at $4.95.

I think, given the pedigree, if you will, of the chef/owner, people who are trying it out have certain expectations which are not necessarily being consistently met. Whether those expectations are warranted might be the better question.

Shane Pritchett was executive chef at Emeril's Delmonico before opening Fat Hen Grill. Should people be expecting diner food at some "world class" level as a result?Jerry wrote:Huh?

Well, at the very least, I would expect my 2 over easy eggs to come out with the yolks intact!Admin wrote:Shane Pritchett was executive chef at Emeril's Delmonico before opening Fat Hen Grill. Should people be expecting diner food at some "world class" level as a result?

There's no excuse for delivering a breakfast as described in the original post.
I wouldn't even do that at home.
Re: Fat Hen Grill
I agree Isa. I wouldn't serve that at home, either! Suzy's right too.... this particular place is getting consistently not-good reports. Life's too short....
There are too many delicious spots, why bother with consistently mediocre? ... the Peppermill for example. I haven't been there in years for breakfast, but my memories are terrific. Thanks for the mention, I want to try it again!

BTG,
It's been about a month since we've gone to Peppermill, but it is still one of our favorites for breakfast right after church on Sunday mornings.
Suzy, we like Russell's as well, and usually go there once every couple of months.
Isa,
When we first got the plate, it looked as if only one was broken, and wife didn't realize the extent until after she began to eat, and she didn't want to send it back after that.
Admin,
We were expecting nothing more that normal breakfast fare. I was interested in the "womlett" and the premium bacon, and was looking for a new place to add into our "rotation".
As I said, I will try this place again for burgers, etc., and hopefully have a better experience. I really do want to support local businesses, but to be honest, my daughter would have been just as happy with a McD's Big Breakfast, and it would have cost me a whole lot less.
