I don't have a problem with the carding. I don't enjoy it, but I understand that it needs to be done. I also agree with user "Blue Cross Sux" that unfortunately sometimes aggressive carding needs to be done to run off customers that are not desired.

But, there are appropriate ways to card and inappropriate ways. Having a customer go around and collect the ids of all his/her friends and bring them up to the bar, in my opinion is an inappropriate way to card.

I will admit, I had already heard a negative story from my brother about his frustrations with the staff at Avenue Pub before I went there. Despite that, I decided I would check the place out for myself since I had seen a few articles about Avenue Pub coming back strong. I'm the individual from the original post of this thread that was carded at the bar and then had to go collect the rest of my friends' ids so that they too could be carded. I've been in my fare share of bars and this is the first time that I've ever had to collect the ids of my friends and bring them to the bar. I happily obliged with the bartender's request to see the other ids. It wasn't until the bartender wanted me to get all my friends who were sitting at a table to turn around and pose so that their faces could be identified on the ids that I decided this was ridiculous. In my opinion we don't and didn't look like a trouble making crowd. Just a group of friends that wanted to hang out, drink a beer, and shoot the $hit. If I hadn't already heard the frustrations my brother had with the bar, I probably would have put up with the carding shenanigans and came home with my own frustrating story about the staff. Instead, I decided that this must be how the bar normally operates and it wasn't something I wanted to have to put up with to get a beer.

While user "AvenuePub" says the bartenders at Avenue Pub are "professional bartenders", I think it takes more than being able to pour a good drink to be a "professional bartender". I think the bartenders working that night handled the situation completely wrong.

There are too many bars in this city to have to deal with this so unfortunately I won't be back and Avenue Pub will get no kind words from me. It's disappointing because I had eaten at J'anita's several times at their old location on Magazine and enjoyed it.

the comment earlier that I should drink somewhere else, because I'm insulted by being carded? Well, I do drink somewhere else when that bartender is on duty. I think someone before me, even said she cards her own mom. That speaks lengths of who she is, and her attitude. If carding the older clientele is a way to get rid of them? well, she's doing a great job of it. I don't think carding someone who is obviously old enough to drink is necessary. I'll make sure and show my aarp card next time I encounter her, maybe I can get a senior citizen discount.:toast:

I agree with da rat. I am 50. It is absurd to card me. In my wildest dreams I couldn't pass for 30. Hell I couldn't pas for 30 when I was 40.

I sometoimes get aksed at the grocery store when buying wine/liquor. I have walked away from $100 or more worth of groceries when asked for id and telling the clerk it wass in my car. Typically, they will look at me and let it go, but on the occasion they pressit, I just say nevermind. I am not going out to my car and coming back in so I cna buy a bottle of red sine. It's not like I look 25ish and am buying handles of liquor.

A little common sense goes a long way.

Common sense like carrying your driver's license into the store with you?
Why on earth is this such a big deal? TD, you come across sounding like you think you shouldn't have to be bothered by things the rest of the little people are. I am pretty sure you are not this kind of person, but I could be wrong. Am I?

Guy, I am generally a pretty easy going person. I don't get upset often. That said, lack of common sense drives me crazy. Stupidity drives me over the edge.

I do not carry my DL on me. I keep it in the car (where I am most likely to need it). If I was going to write a check, or use a credit card, I would carry my DL/ID. If I am using cash (yes, some of us still do), I feel no need to carry said DL/ID. At 50, it is a nuisance to be carded. At 30 it might make you feel good. At my age, it is a pain in the ass, as well as absurd. I promise yoou, no one with even the slightest bit of common sense is going to mistake me for someone under 21.

I am not an elitest. I try hard not to be arrogant (it is hard sometimes). I don't have a superiority complex. I am down to earth.

But, as I said, stupidity (I should addignorance) and lack of common sense, drive me crazy.

It is hard living your life knowing there is a better way for almost everyone to do the things they do. That is my burden, Guy, and I do my best with it.

Turbodog,
I'm not saying some laws aren't annoying or seem silly, and you do have a right not to patronize a business, but it's not the fault of the cashier, they are following store procedures, they don't make the rules.

To leave all your stuff on the counter over that, when you already know they may ask you, it seems like you're having a temper tantrum. Is it that big of a deal to put it in your pocket? Everyone likes to have their own way, but it doesn't always work out like that.

I have noticed most groceries and gas station type stores now have a sign stating that ID is needed, I don't think it's based on how old or young a person looks, but what the law is....And places are tested to see if they do ask everyone, and if they don't the store can be cited.

I'm with Suzy on this one.

Plus, it's just good common sense to carry your drivers license or some form of ID on you. You could be hit by car or anything.....it would be a royal pain if you had no identification on you. I just don't see the big deal about being carded. They're doing their jobs.
