If you can get your hands on Sprecher, it is excellent (as is the Sprecher ginger ale).

Just tried Boylan's. It was okay, but very mildly flavored. I won't be buying it again.

We stock the following "specialty" root beers (and related products):
Boylan's Root Beer (Boylan's Birch Beer and Creamy Red Birch Beer)
Virgil's Root Beer
Maine Root Root Beer (Maine Root Sarsaparilla)
Abita
Dr. Brown's
Root beer is not my thing . . . but all move well. Abita and Dr. Brown's are the best sellers . . . followed by Boylan's.
I have been especially surprised at the recent popularity of the Maine Root . . . although I should not be surprised since their ginger beer is extraordinary.
I believe Virgil's is available at Whole Foods and Rouses. Maine Root is available at Whole Foods.
P.S. Keep a look out for GUS (Grown-Up Sodas).
http://www.drinkgus.com/ We have 4 flavors(Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Ginger) right now . . . and are trying to get the remaining four. Exceptional product.

I clicked on this to kill some time because apparently Outlook didn't close properly and is being checked and this takes FOREVER but I digress....
I'm amazed to see a long thread on Root Beer and no mention of Barq's. I might drink one diet root beer a year so I'm not into it like you guys but where do they fit on the chart? (if at all)

Barq's is okay, but not "really" root beer to me. (Can we all remember the "is it root beer?" tagline on the yellow label?) No creamy, foamy head--just cola-style fizz.

I've never liked Barq's. We had it in the midwest where I grew up, but I was a much bigger fan of IBC and similar styles.

I ALWAYS have Abita and Barq's longnecks iced down by the checkout. Barq's is selected about 75% of the time.
They are a natural with a good roast beef po'boy.

Just another brief review:
I had a so called 'Natural Brew' rootbeer with lunch today. I am regretting that I bought a fourpack of this stuff. Despite all of the wonderful claims made by the marketing department, this stuff just tasted extremely medicinal to me. Otherwise, it had a nice mouthfeel, but that taste was just too bad to really enjoy.
