Re: Abita Satsuma Wheat
There's quite a bit of Buttlight drinking up here too. DF makes something called Lawnmower light specifically for this crowd (it is nasty). So I don't buy your premise.
But I love Abita! No knock on them in any way. Just DF is making the most interesting brews in the US that I know of (Paolo Santo, Midas Touch, ImmortAle, etc, etc), unless you want to talk overhopped beers from the west coast. Then I'd have to say we have a real difference in opinion.
On a beer related note, TB, there's an importer in the DC area who started bringing in a lot of French beers (last name Cambier; google him or you can read about him on the WashingtonPost web site). I was surprised by their quality. France has been making some pretty good stuff under the radar (like Brasserie La Sancerroise Au Gruyt and La Drolesse, Brass La Bourguignone, Mandrin walnut, Mont Blanc brewery). He also brought in a bunch of French Christmas beers; damned good!

Guy, I don't know much about French brews. but I wil ckeck it out. I don't like the west coast hop bombs, but I realy like some of the Rouge Ales (mocha porter, choc stout, dead guy, etc.).
I will look to try more DH brews, as I have enjoyed the ones I have tried. Limited selections around here, but I do see it.

I like the Rouge's too.

Me too. If given the choice to order anything on tap at Lagers, it is usually the dead guy ale. Love that stuff.
Usually I end up with one pint of Rouge and one pint of whatever the Abita Select is.
Re: Abita Satsuma Wheat
I have tried over three hundred different beers from around the world. I have many favorites, but my all time favorite pint is a pint of Brains Bitter from Castel Deudrath at Portmeirion in Wales. I love cask ales and I love bitters. I will be impressed when someone here makes a good bitter.
AS WITH GOD, I TOO WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS................

Re: Abita Satsuma Wheat
I picked up a case of the Satsuma Wit on Friday and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It's a good wit and pretty true to style and I guess that is why I didn't like it as much as I had hoped.
The beer was a bit heavy on the clove and coriander and too spicy for my tastes. The Strawberry Harvest lager is one of my favorite summer/fruit beers, so I had hoped that the Satsuma Wit would be a little more geared toward the citrusy summer beer style, similar to a Bell's Oberon.
I bought a case because I only know of one retailer in Tampa that is carrying it and didn't want to lose my chance at buying it. Anyway, I'll drink the rest of the case and enjoy it :-)

Re: Abita Satsuma Wheat
Just tried my first bottle it wasn't very cold so I'm sure the flavors were more pronounced. Very good but a clear color I thought it was a nonfiltered and expected a cloudier color more like the wheat. Very heavy spice note and I couldn't pick up any orange flavor. More like christmas time flavors than what I would want in a summer brew. I'll be drinking it often and may change my opinion but not my favorite (I really like heavily hopped brews like the jockamo)

I've only had one, so I can't speak at length about it. I agree the "Wit" element is pronounced. It's a specific, aggressive, flavorful beer. You have to give Abita credit for having the huevos to come out with something like this. I don't, however, think this is going to have the cross-over appeal as has the Strawberry. The Satsuma is too much of a boutique beer for that. I don't see much of anyone drinking more than one or two at a sitting . . . or a season.

The wit is not getting good reviews at all. What gives Turbo? Tell the brew master to put a little more citrus flavor in it.

Have to agree 100% on all of your points. I do think that Abita totally went against the grain of producing drinkable beers for the south Louisiana crowd and instead brewed something that is a little more "to style." My only problem is that I expected a really unique and drinkable product, similar to the Strawberry Lager. Although it is a really good beer, I don't think the Satsuma Wit will have a wide audience in the NOLA area.Blue Cross Sux wrote:I've only had one, so I can't speak at length about it. Well I have a case of them, so if you're passing through Tampa, then stop on over for a beer. Or if you just wait to come for the Saints game, then I will save you one.Blue Cross Sux wrote: I don't see much of anyone drinking more than one or two at a sitting . . . or a season.
