My friend JB and I went to Dick and Jenny's on Wednesday night. While I don't think this restaurant is what it used to be, it still is sensational.
We started off with the Fried Green Tomatoes featuring crab claws. Despite the ever changing menu at Dick and Jenny's, this has been a mainstay of the menu for many years. It was very good. Also brought to the table was savory cheesecake of portobello mushrooms and point reyes bleu cheese. I am not a huge fan of savory cheesecakes (the abomination at Jacques-Imo's comes to mind) but this was low key albeit very rich. It paired very nicely with the Tudor Pinot Noir.
We had hemmed and hawed about getting something called the Duck Confit Pain Perdu. And our waitress brought us one regardless. (Her tip was going through the roof at this point.) Essentially, you get a duck confit sandwich garnished with apples and brie, alongside a mango chutney. Kind of like a Monte Cristo but Duck Confit as the filling instead of turkey. It sounds bizarre and I think it is one of those things that is too cute by half but it really did taste great (which is all that matters).
Our entrees came next, as did a second bottle of wine. I ordered the pork chop and to tell you the truth I don't remember much about it. It came with an herbed risotto which was more like a green jasmine rice type thing. I did clean my plate. JB ordered the pecan smoke filet mignon. This was probably the biggest disappointment of the night. There is no need to over power the flavor of filet mignon with a pecan smoke. You can eat filet mignon off a flat tire and it would taste great. No need for this whatsoever. It also came with roasted duck fat potatoes which could have used more seasoning.
Our waitress talked us into dessert, I had the pistachio cake. This isn't something I would have ordered but for the rec of our waitress. It was absolutely outstanding.
After the meal, we retired to Dino's for cigars and scotch. I really have no idea how I got home that night.
Dick and Jenny's comes recommended for the atmosphere, service, and their unique take on their menu. Just be aware that they take some risks on and while they have their fair share of home runs, there are some things that while not a total disaster maybe aren't quite as good as they otherwise should be.
Still, I am looking forward to going back. Strong recommendation.

I respect and appreciate the opinions of anyone who admits that their dining experience got a little hazy as the courses progressed. Hell yeah!
Glad you had fun and got home safe.
